The Golden Temple Amritsar India (Sri Harimandir Sahib Amritsar) is not only a central religious place of the Sikhs, but also a symbol of human brotherhood and equality. Everybody, irrespective of cast, creed or race can seek spiritual solace and religious fulfillment without any hindrance. It also represents the distinct identity, glory and heritage of the Sikhs.
The most holy and revered destination for Sikh religion, Amritsar, is also a popular name in the chapters of Indian history. Both history and spirituality are intertwined along the walls of Amritsar that pull in enthusiastic travellers from round the world. While talking about Amritsar's history, the first thing we can recollect is the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre of 1919 that brutally killed around 1,000 civilians.
The Partition Museum is a public museum located in the town hall in Amritsar, India. The museum aims to become the central repository of stories, materials, and documents related to the post-partition riots that followed the division of British India into two independent countries: India and Pakistan.
There is daily flag raising and lowering ceremony at Wagah Border, which is done with pomp and ceremony. It involves some of the tallest members of the Indian Border Force and the Pakistani Rangers marching and closing the many gates. It has become a tradition for people from both sides of the border gather and see this. Both sides synchronise their parade and the entire event is meant to create a feel-good/patriotic fervour amongst the crowd. It is called the beating retreat ceremony. Since 2010, the Wagha ceremony has begun to tone down so one might see less of the flourishing of Peacock helmets and goose-stepping.

We booked a Holiday package from this agency. It was fantastic tour and very reasonable price of our six day tour to Chandigarh to Dharamshala, Dalhousie, Amritsar and drop back to Chandigarh. Driver Karan was very good fellow. Our Amritsar day tour was good. They showed us Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, Warmemorial and Wagha border retreat ceremony.
The whole temple area is an amazing place. It is beautiful by day and by night. You can visit whenever you like. There are booths to safely leave your shoes. They provide free drinking water.
I would highly recommend this tour. Amritsar is a very busy complicated place for anyone unfamiliar with the area. Our driver/guide was outstanding. He made sure we were always well looked after and in the right place at the right time. His commentary was interesting and easy to understand.

It wasn't a guided tour , more like a taxi ride and being dropped off at each location. No explanations given at each location very disappointed

The Golden Temple is a must, no matter what religion people are. We went during the day and took a tour provided by an employee of the temple. It was amazing. We saw the kitchen, which provides enormous amount of free meals for the devotees. The next day, we went for the evening ceremony. This was something very special, which will stay with me for long time.
Unfortunately the experience was quite stressful. First of all the tour company, despite asking, didn't let us know what time we were being picked up for the tour and by whom until the middle of the night. They also told us it was one person but then another person arrived, which we thought was a scam. The chauffeur was very nice and tried to be helpful, but was obviously NOT a guide and did NOT speak English, so took a while to work out that he had replaced the original guide. We rang the tour company to say he didn't speak English and they did quickly send someone to meet us who did speak English and was an actual guide. However he was not with us for the last part of the trip to the Wagha Border so we got lost on the way out of the ceremony. The tour company also did not inform us that the Partition Museum was closed on the day of the tour.
