Ghent Walking Tour - City Highlights and Beyond Tradition

Description
We begin with a short introduction at the Vrijdagmarkt before setting off on a 1.5- to 2-hour journey of discovery through Ghent. Along the way, you’ll uncover the origins of the city’s name and explore the very birthplace of Ghent, a city with a history stretching back nearly 1,400 years. The tour takes you past iconic landmarks such as the three medieval towers — Saint Bavo’s Cathedral, the Ghent Belfry and Saint Nicholas’ Church — and the picturesque Graslei and Korenlei quays. In the late Middle Ages, this harbour area was the beating heart of trade, helping Ghent grow into the most prosperous city in Northern Europe. Yet Ghent is much more than its medieval splendour. The city is home to three serene beguinages, outstanding museums and green parks. It proudly hosted the World Expo of 1913 and is internationally known as a capital of street art — far beyond the famous Graffiti Street. Today, Ghent is a vibrant, living city where visitors, residents and students come together.

Sophie's credibility is in question. She got things backwards or wrong such as months with "r" being bad for muscles when in fact they are the best months to eat them. She also said wall anchors were to designate floors added on to a building but they are actually support for masonry walls. Overall good tour with out of way locations so a fair amount of walking. She was great to ask questions and very pleasant.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re glad you enjoyed the route, the lesser-known locations, and Sophie’s friendly and engaging manner. Regarding the wall anchors, you are correct that they primarily support masonry walls. In some later periods, they were sometimes added after modifications or changes to a building - as you saw on the tour. On the topic of mussels, Sophie shared her understanding at the time, noting that the months with 'r' are those when mussels are not as popular as the summer months. The points you raised arose from spontaneous questions during the tour rather than the prepared content. Sophie shared her personal understanding openly and did not present it as definitive information. We value these exchanges with guests, as they invite discussion and learning on both sides. We appreciate your thoughtful comments and will take them into account as we continue to support and guide our team. Thank you again for joining the tour, and we hope you enjoy the rest of your European visit.
