It was originally built to house the three organs of power of the Salvadoran State and their respective dependent offices. Over time, the building became too small compared to its original functions and each body abandoned it, the last to withdraw being the Legislative Assembly in the 1970s. In 1980 it was declared a National Monument
The site where the cathedral stands today, in the center of the city of San Salvador, is the place where the colonial church of Santo Domingo stood in the 19th century, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1873. During this time, the cathedral witnessed the numerous social conflicts that the country was experiencing. On August 6, 1975, the Popular Revolutionary Bloc (BPR) took over the temple in protest against government repression. It was the first of several shots of the cathedral that took place until 1980. Under the floor of the cathedral there is a large space called "the crypt", in which there are two chapels. Just below the altar of the temple is the mausoleum of the saint and martyr Óscar Romero

Absolutely awful experience. Waited at the airport for over 2 hours to be picked up. No one would pick up the phone to let us know what's going on. As for the tour itself, we only saw the city - they did not take us to either Puerta del Diablo or the Rainbow slide! The tour lasted under three hours even though it was supposed to be a full-day tour. Have reached out to the company multiple times seeking a refund. They will not respond.
Absolutely terrible experience. Flew in specifically for a 1-day layover tour. Sat around the airport for over 2 hours waiting for the tour guide/driver. As for the tour itself, we only saw the city, we did not see puerta del diable or the rainbow slide. Horrible communication with the company - they wouldn't pick up the phone; would reply randomly through Whatsapp. Have requested a refund and have gotten no response. I would avoid this company/tour at all costs.
Beyond horrible experience with this company. My family and I booked this tour for our one excision in El Salvador. We requested hotel pick up and I reached out to the number listed on the listing and messaged on the trip advisor messaging. They got back to me via WhatsApp and said they cannot locate my booking. After sending them all of the information including screenshots of my booking.. NO ONE EVER GOT BACK TO ME. My family tried calling and messaging them as well and NO RESPONSE. I called more than 10 times and NO RESPONSE. At this point this has to be a scam. Do not EVER book with this tour company unless you want to be scammed. Such a horrible experience on our first day in El Salvador.
The phone number never worked. They never called me and canceled on me twice. Almost ruined my trip in El Salvador because I really wanted to do the rainbow slide. I'll be back and next time find a better company.
A very good tour , my driver met me at airport for arrival and departure with courteous and professionalism, I was able to see all the sites I had planned and the driver went above and beyond I recommend this tour and will book again my next trip in El Salvador
I loved this tour! My guide, Don Martin, was a pleasure to be with! He is very knowledgeable about the city and it’s history! He helped me with pictures, shopping, and answered all the questions I had! I recommend this tour and specifically with Don Martin. I plan to come back and do more tours with him and my family! Muchísimas gracias, Don Martin! Usted fue la mejor compañía para este tour.
