Description

The Sani Pass Full Day Tour departs from Durban to Underberg where your 4 x 4 tour begins. At Underberg, you are transferred into a 4 x 4 vehicle and from here you go up a gravel winding pass that is higher and steeper and much tougher than any of its Southern African competitors. This Pass offers the most exceptional views in South Africa. As the altitude increases, the road becomes narrower and more treacherous. All signs of human habitation disappear as you come face to face with the vast, desolate beauty of the Drakensberg Mountains. As part of this tour, you visit a traditional Sotho village and interact with local Sotho people and learn about their culture. You also dine and drink in Africa's highest pub (own expense). This is an exceptional tour not to be missed.

Driver did not show up!

Our driver DID NOT show up or respond to me on the morning of the trip despite repeated attempts to contact them. I have requested a refund.

Operator response

Hi Justin, I'm really sorry your driver didn't show up and left you stranded. That falls far short of our standards at Africa Top Tours. We've approved your full refund and removed that driver from our platform while we review what happened. I'd value the chance to rebuild your trust.

Glimpse of Lesotho country

Elias our guide was an amazing guide and 4x4 driver. Joseph was our driver from Durban to Underberg. Both kept us safe on this tour. We had a tasting of a hot bread made by a local and it was very delicious! The Basotho lamb and tripe were delicious as well! The view is amazing from the pub!

Operator response

This trip was long but absolutely brilliant. We had a long transfer from Durban to Underberg where we transferred into a 4x4 to take us up to the pass. It was a long drive on a stone/ gravel road. We had an excellent guide who told us loads of information. Provided photo stops and even served us tea/coffee, homemade muffins and biscuits. We then explored the area around the pub. A visit to the highest point of Lesotho, a visit to a local family home and an excellent meal at the highest pub in South Africa. This tour is a must.

SCAMMERS - tried to send us with other people on a ‘private’ tour

Africa Top Tours should be renamed Africa’s Top Scammers! The owner waited until my booking was non-refundable to inform me that if I wanted my tour to be ‘private’ e.g. just your party to travel it would cost more and you’d need to pay in cash on the day. They then told me I’d also need to pay this because I requested to be back at the airport earlier. This was not true because I’d asked to be back in Durban by the latest 19:00, we were being picked up at 05:30 which would have made this tour way longer than the specified 12 hours. DO NOT BOOK THIS TOUR unless you want to be scammed! I thankfully got my refund from Viator, complete waste of time otherwise.

Sani Pass Day Trip

You will see some beautiful country as you travel this very rugged mountain pass. Ne aware that are afraid of heights this might not be the trip for you as you ascend and them descend this steep road. It can be bumpy at times. The food we had at the top of the mountain was delicious and authentic.

It will be a long and...

It will be a long and exhausting trip if you start and end in Durban. Great guides, scenery, adventure. A little bit too much admin to cross and come back to SA, after driving 2km in Lesotho. Village visit (with presentation about Lesotho), visit in the bar/restaurant were both well organized. Bring some little cash with you to help Lesotho people in the village. And a little bit more cash to buy blankets from them. Picnick on the way back was a special surprise. Thank you!

Operator response

Hello Gabor Benko We're so grateful for your kind words! It's great to hear that you enjoyed the tour. We'll definitely pass on your tips to future travelers. Thanks again for your review!

The Sani Pass is a beautiful experience of nature with the scenery changing around every corner. The drive through the pass was an exciting adventure and we enjoyed the visit to the village. Lunch at the highest pub was very delicious at a great price.

Breathtaking Views and Winding Roads on the Legendary Sani Pass

The Sani Pass was an wonderful experience, offering breathtaking landscapes that showcase the best of both South Africa and Lesotho—especially the thrilling, winding curves of the pass itself. At the top, the famous “Highest Pub in Africa” served hearty food and the refreshing Maluti beer, adding to the charm of the journey. Although the ride to and from Durban is quite long, the tour is absolutely worth it for the scenery, adventure, and unique atmosphere you’ll encounter along the way.
