Itinerary
We drive up the mountain at the heart of Menorca where we visit the convent and church of the Virgin of the Toro whilst we enjoy the breath-taking views over the island.
Past the lovely beach of Cavallería and through the remains of the Roman port settlement of Sa Nitja, we drive along a remarkable headland that reaches out as far as the lighthouse which is perched on the island's most spectacular cliffs where we stop off to enjoy the best views of the island's northern coastline.
During our visit of Fornells, a charming fishing village which takes pride in its gastronomic reputation and its beautiful sea promenade teeming with inviting restaurants, we enjoy the views on its large bay whilst we explore the remains of Sant Antoni's Castle and stroll through the tranquil little streets dotted with characteristic small shops and businesses.
Because of its natural characteristics and its strategic position, the port of Mahon, one of the longest natural harbours of the world, has been a coveted prey of all maritime powers who contested control of the Mediterranean and who, on different occasions, have dominated Minorca because of the military and commercial value of this port. Apart from its scenic beauty, the port offers numerous sites of historical interest such as the King's Island, the Lazaret Island and the Fortress of Isabel II.
In Binibeca Vell, a delightful whitewashed enclave which represents the essence of a typical Mediterranean coastal village, we lose ourselves in the fabulous maze of narrow winding alleys which look like taken from a fairy-tale.
From this viewpoint, you can overlook the marvelous Cala Galdana cove.

We booked a private island tour for the day with Alvin, with some really good suggestions on what to see. We'd already jumped on the bus to Mahon earlier in the week. Nice and early start at 9am for us and the girls. We were based in Arenal de Castell. Started at the beautiful Mirador Cim del Toro, in the very centre of the island and the Sanctuary of the Virgen Del Toro. Such a wonderful story behind the Sanctuary and Alvin brings so much detail on this as we travelled. He's a gifted story teller. Then to Ciutadella for a nice walk around the old city and the harbour. This was memorable. A stop at Poblat de Torrellafuda, a Neolithic village to see the village, ancient tower and burial chamber from the very early times. Next was a photo stop at Cala Galdana, and then some time at the Far de Cavalleria and the picturesque lighthouse and coast line. So we covered West, South, North and back to the East of the island. We enjoyed our time with Alvin, as he is very knowledgeable about Menorca and it's very rich history..money very well spent. Even our two teenage girls enjoyed the day (who did NOT want to go at all!).
Gordon, thank you so much for your detailled review. I am delighted to hear that your teenage daughters also had a good time!
Contacted Alvin by email before we arrived in Menorca to book a full day private island tour for 2 adults and 2 teenagers. Alvin was very relaxed about what we could visit and what he thought we might enjoy. He's chatty, engaging and even the teenagers enjoyed the day. He took us to (in no particular order) Ciutadella and its harbour and enjoyed a 2 hour walking tour learning about its history and we had a wonderful ice cream that's only made on the island. El Toro is the highest peak in the centre of the island. Amazing views over the entire island, shops, cafe and an lovely church to visit. Far de Cavalleria lighthouse, walks, caves and snack bar. Cala Galdana's gorgeous views of the beach and ocean. Learnt about Poblat de Torrellafuda's megalithic monuments and it's peaceful surroundings were so tranquil. We were the only ones there. Alvin is a lovely man and very accommodating and will change plans to suit you and what you are interested in. He is so knowledgeable about Menorca, it's history and environment that his love for the island rubs off on you. Don't book with anyone else but Alvin. You won't be disappointed. Highly recommended.
Thank you very much for your detailled description. You are a nice family which made this tour an enjoyable day!
This was one of the finest private tours I have ever had. Alain is extremely knowledgeable and loves to share his expertise. I am a world traveler and I love to absorb and be exposed to the marvels of any given place. We spent eight hours together combing the wonders of this island. Before my tour, I had minor expectations for Menorca. I have already been to the other Balearic Islands. After my day trip with Alain, I had complexly changed my opinion. The island had beautiful parts, especially Ciutadella, a stunning city architecturally and culturally. The Museum is excellent there. I loved seeing the beach and cove of Cala Galdana. The auxiliary road from Es Mercadal to Harbor, called Kaine’s road was also beautiful and an excellent choice of off-the “beaten path” routes. We observed the prehistoric sites from a distance. I must mention that I was in a wheelchair during our excursion. I had had an acute attack of sciatica. Alain walked me everywhere and did so with warmth and great consideration. He made my day so enjoyable and I really got to know the island. He and I bonded because I have extreme interest in the history and culture of Menorca. Thank you Alain for a splendid day.
Dear Joan. I am very glad I that you enjoyed the trip and I could contribute to make you see and appreciate some of the island's treasures.
