Fort Cochin Heritage Tour by The Kochi Heritage Project

Description
For over two millennia, ships crossed oceans to reach this coast. Long before European empires, Roman gold flowed into Kerala for pepper and Chinese fleets anchored in these waters. This flagship walking experience by The Kochi Heritage Project (TKHP) traces the forces that transformed an ancient Indian Ocean port into the "Emporium of the World." This is not a typical colonial tour. Curated by our research team, this journey moves beyond rehearsed scripts to explore how commerce, faith, and diplomacy reshaped this coast. We walk the historic quarters of Fort Kochi, but our story begins 3,000 years ago with the maritime networks of Muziris. Designed for the conscious traveler seeking depth over distance, this 2.5-hour experience offers exclusive access to Kochi’s character. As a social enterprise, we ensure your journey supports local heritage preservation. Come see how global history is written into a single kilometer of the city once crowned the "Queen of the Arabian Sea."

Incredible tour experience, with in-depth, rich, and layered narrative histories about the history of a fascinating city. Would recommend as a must-do for anyone visiting the city to receive a grounded perspective of the region.
Johann took us on a custom Fort Kochi tour on a monsoon day in July. It was a most enjoyable and immersive walk through Kochi history at a pace that allowed us to absorb the many fascinating stories that he had to narrate. Even the special bread that we were served with tea had a backstory involving the Dutch and British East India companies and the Caribbean ! Even though I have strong ties to Kochi through my mother, I learned so much more about the city in the couple of hours with Johann than I had in an entire childhood. The rain gods also cooperated to make this a truly unforgettable experience. Highly recommend for anyone who cares to go deeper into the city’s origin and evolution!
Great tour! Johann's stories were very well-researched and included historical and cultural significance of several spots. I felt like I understood Kochi a bit better after the tour!
I would like to take a moment to thank Johann for being a good storyteller. Like a kid i like a good story; it transports the imagination to an era where challenges & change happened into what is where we stand today. He is easy going & you might spend longer than you bargained for. He is proud & passionate about his home so reader i recommend this tour. Lets bring his stories home to tell as well
Johaan Binny Kuruvilla took us on a lovely walking tour around Fort Kochi titled The Queens Story. He started it with us walking towards the fishing nets and the Chinese influence due to trading in Opium and spices and silk. Part of the silk route. Then after the 1500s the Portuguese took over and fortified the Fort and stayed for 160 years! Then we went on to see the Dutch mansions....David Hall, Thakur house built on one of the 7 bastions. They carried on for 130 years.... mostly trading. Saw the war memorial at the St Francis church before that.... saw my ancestors name on it. He mentioned after India got its independence, the then finance minister talked of Cochin as the Queen of the Arabian Sea! Finally he took us to the 8th Bastian and gave us lime juice which was flavored with a spice we had to guess, and a Dutch bread with raisins , Breuther bread. This also had 2 spices in it and is eaten with butter, jam and sliced bananas. Lovely end to the walk!!
Great tour with Johann, the founder of the company. The tour is very thoughtful and informative, for selecting places to visit. Warmest recommendation!
The tour with Johann was outstanding. We were a group of 5 and maximum is 8. It was pleasantly conversational. Johann is both very knowledgeable but also passionate. We started at 7 am so as to avoid the heat which was worth doing. We finished with a special snack and drink local to the area included in the price. We enjoyed it so much we booked Mattancherry tour.
Wonderful experience with our first international family of 8. Johann wove a beautiful tale that was informative and entertaining for a wide age group (11 - 80+). Very accommodating. Highly recommend in Fort Kochi!
We did an early morning walk on 13th Dec with the Kochi Heritage Project, guided by Johan and it was absolutely fantastic. His storytelling and deep knowledge brought the history of Fort Kochi alive at every corner. This was truly one of the highlights of my trip. One of the best heritage walks I’ve experienced, hosted by someone who genuinely enjoys sharing history. The walk ended with a lovely traditional breakfast, including Dutch bread. Highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Kochi...don’t miss it!
I really enjoyed our kochi heritage tour on Jew Town. I learned a lot about the place and its history. Johan is easy to understand and presents the information in an entertaining and accessible way. He has a wealth of knowledge and was open to questions.
