“Nomdor somsa” is a popular style of Uzbek somsa, or savory pastry, known for its rich, juicy filling, often made with finely minced meat (lamb or beef) mixed with onions and a blend of spices. What makes it unique is the layering of dough, creating a crisp and flaky exterior. Somsas are traditionally cooked in a tandoor oven, which gives them a distinct flavor and crispy texture. In Uzbekistan, somsas are enjoyed as street food and at home, with many regional variations. “Nomdor” may refer to a reputable or well-known style, emphasizing its quality.

Manti are a beloved traditional dish across Central Asia, including Uzbekistan. These are large dumplings typically filled with minced lamb or beef, onions, and sometimes pumpkin or potato. What sets them apart is their size (larger than many dumplings) and the steaming method used to cook them, usually in a multi-layered steamer called a mantovarka. The dough is rolled thin and shaped around the filling, often leaving a small opening at the top. Manti are served with sour cream, yogurt, or a simple vinegar and pepper sauce, and garnished with fresh herbs. Their hearty filling and flavorful spices make manti a comforting and popular dish, especially in winter.

Fun and Tasty day out in Tashkent. You won’t go hungry!

Izzat was a great guide on the food tour around Tashkent. She was so knowledgeable and engaging and I learned a lot about the history of the foods eaten here. With lots of samples it was a fantastic introduction to Uzbekistan.

Yummy Food, Good Guide but Poor Value

Our guide was accommodating and shared interesting stories about himself and life in Uzbekistan. He bought us to some great spots to sample yummy Uzbek foods. However, if you read the fine print, the tour only covers the last meal at the plov restaurant, so the other two spots are pay your own way. I don't mind doing that, but with an $89/person fee, and with meals being quite cheap, the value was not good at all. I think the $89 should have covered everything.

Family freindly Amir Shashlik Samarkand

Amir Shashlik a family run establishment with an open front Bbq kitchen. Family room and substantial main area beautifully decorated. The service was courteous and efficient but the crowning glory came in the guise of succulent juicy lamb chops with salad and fresh bread. Simple yet satisfyingly delicious and wholesome. A place to revisit on our next trip for sure! Be warned about parking on the main road as you will be asked to move.
