This was a lovely curated experience, and such a interesting way to discover a slice of Singapore's history. It was a perfect way to spend an afternoon - trying the various foods that Singapore's early migrants brought with them which has become part of the local culture. The establishments - whether food or a historical stop - that we visited had that undeniably Singapore feel to it. Serene was most informative, and also took care of our group's needs. She made sure that we had time to rest in between stops.
Thank you so much for spending your time with us, and for sharing such a thoughtful review. We’re delighted that the experience gave you a meaningful glimpse into Singapore’s early migrant history and the flavours that originated from the process. It’s wonderful to hear that the food stops and heritage sites resonated with you. Those small, lived in details are exactly what we hope guests will feel: the sense that Singapore’s culture isn’t just learned, but tasted, walked, and experienced. We’re also very glad that Serene made your journey comfortable and enriching. She cares deeply about her guests, and your kind words will mean a lot to her. Thank you again for joining us. We hope to welcome you back for another slice of Singapore’s living memory.
I had the best time with two of my friends on the Chinatown food tour organised by Istoria Collective with Serene and Ronald. Initially, I was wondering if it was going to be too hot since we met at 3 p.m., but the way they curated the tour made it feel really comfortable. There was a little bit of walking, but it was nicely paced, and we passed through indoor spaces with shelter along the way, which made a huge difference. I loved that we got to learn a little bit about the different spots we visited, including the temples, while enjoying really good food throughout the tour. We even ended with coffee and Kaya toast, which was such a nice way to wrap everything up. One of my friends who joined us was 15 weeks pregnant, and I really appreciated how thoughtfully the tour was paced. She was comfortable throughout, and both Ronald and Serene were very attentive to everyone’s needs. Overall, it was such a fun, enjoyable, and well-curated experience. I’d definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a relaxed yet fun way to explore Chinatown, learn a bit of its history, and enjoy some really great food along the way.
Thank you so much for joining us on the Food Tour @ Chinatown, and for taking the time to share such a generous review. We’re really glad to hear that you and your friends had a comfortable and enjoyable experience with us. We pay a lot of attention to how the tour feels beyond the vibes, it has to be comfortable and thus it means a lot that you noticed the pacing, the sheltered routes, and the balance between walking, storytelling, and rest stops. Comfort is something we design very intentionally, and we’re happy it made a difference for you. We’re also especially grateful for your kind words about how we cared for your friend. Ensuring every guest feels safe, supported, and at ease, whether pregnant, elderly, or simply adjusting to the weather, is a big part of how we host. Knowing she felt comfortable throughout truly warms our hearts. It was a joy sharing Chinatown’s flavours, stories, and hidden corners with all of you, and we’re delighted that the food, the temples, and even the final coffee and kaya toast moment landed so nicely. Thank you again for recommending us. We’d love to welcome you back anytime for more relaxed, meaningful explorations of Singapore.
Serene was a friendly and enthusiastic guide to Singapore food culture. She shared many stories about Singapore’s history and how it shaped local versions of dishes from China, India, Malaysia and elsewhere. I learned how to order coffee or tea like a local, how to navigate Hawker centres, and how to avoid the busiest times. I’m looking forward to explore more on my own. We also visited some less well-known spots, temples, and mini-museums that I never would have found on my own. Serene was able to adapt parts of the tour based on what we talked about and what I liked, including some of the best won tons I have ever had (Ji Ji noodle house in Hong Lim Food Centre). She also took some paths indoors to stay out of the rain or heat. I left full of food and full of places to come back to later in my trip, and a deeper understanding of Singapore. This tour was excellent value and a great introduction to Singapore’s Chinatown.
It was an absolute joying having you onboard for the tour and thank you for sharing this wonderful review. We’re delighted to hear that Serene made your first taste of Singapore’s food culture such a rich and memorable experience. Her enthusiasm for our hawker heritage and her knack for weaving history into every bite are exactly what we hope guests feel on our tours. Glad that you enjoyed learning how locals order kopi and navigate our hawker centres that enhances the understanding and appreciation of Singapore. It’s great to know the quieter temples, mini museums, and hidden corners of Chinatown added to your adventure, and that the tour could flex with your interests (including that unforgettable bowl of dumpling noodle at Ji Ji. Kristen will be over the moon to hear this). Thank you as well for noticing the care Serene took with the weather and pacing. We want every guest to feel comfortable and to finish the tour with the feeling that the menu’s portion was generous. We’re truly grateful that you chose to explore Singapore with us, and we hope the rest of your trip is filled with even more delicious discoveries. You’re always welcome back for another walk through our living food culture.
What an excellent tour this was! Ronald told me so much about Asian culture and history tgrough this carefully curated tour, that was also tailored to my interests. Not only did I get to try meat dishes, but also soupand seafood as well as drinks like sugar cane juice. I also got to go into different types of sites in Chinatown from hawker centers and wet/dry markets to malls and temples. I highly recommended this food tour. It was fun as well as tasty. Thanks again, Ronald, for a wonderful experience!
Thank you so much for this fantastic review! We are thrilled that you enjoyed the journey through Chinatown and that the mix of history, culture, and diverse tastings, hit the spot. It was a true pleasure sharing the stories of our hawker centers, wet markets, and temples with you. We hope to have you on another food adventure the next time you are in Singapore. Cheers.
Attended the food tour with my friends, led by Ronald. Super friendly and engaging tour guide that gave us insights on Chinatown in a way that I have never seen before, in both modern and traditional ways. The 3.5hrs food tour was just right for us, with a good balance of delicious food items, ranging from roasted meats, laksa, curry puff, toast & coffee, chicken noodles etc. In between each stop, there were also some visits to traditional spots and temples around. Also because Singapore is really hot, their tour route was considerate to plan it such that we are walking through air conditioned places most of the times and carefully curated rest spots. Gotta say that we were also really lucky with the weather that it almost rained but didn’t in the end. Apart from that, what differentiates him from other tour guides is his relations with the hawkers and shop owners. The friendliness and enthusiasm made us feel like home away from home. Highly recommended food tour to consider!
Thank you so much for this insightful review and it’s really awesome that you and your friends enjoyed the balance of food, culture, and comfort throughout the tour. It means a lot that the modern and traditional stories of Chinatown resonated with you. Your note about the hawkers and shop owners is heartening. The relationships built with them over time are truly at the heart of this tour. Many of them wake up before dawn, perfecting their craft daily and carry decades of heritage in their hands. Being able to greet them by name, share a laugh, and support them isn’t work for us. It’s part of the community we’re trying to nurture. Food tastes different when it’s served by someone who knows you, trusts you and is proud to share what they’ve created. That sense of belonging, of being welcomed into a neighbourhood rather than just passing through, is something we hope every guest can feel. Your comment about feeling “home away from home” truly captures what we aim to build. Thank you again for joining the tour and for appreciating the community behind the food. We hope to host you again for another meaningful, delicious journey through Singapore.
We had such a wonderful time on this tour with Ronald. He was incredibly engaging, friendly and knowledgeable, and made us feel comfortable from the start. He also knew all the best shortcuts and shaded walking routes, which was greatly appreciated in Singapore’s hot and humid weather. The food recommendations were amazing and felt genuinely local rather than touristy. Ronald brought us to hidden, gatekept spots that we probably would never have found on our own, including places that seemed to be mostly frequented by locals. We tried laksa, curry puffs, chicken rice and some of the crispiest roast pork we have ever had. The walking distance was very manageable, with enough breaks along the way, so the tour never felt rushed or tiring. Ronald also shared interesting stories about the neighbourhoods, local culture and everyday life in Singapore, which made the experience feel much more personal. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Singapore who wants to experience authentic local food beyond the usual tourist recommendations!
Thank you for sharing your experiences and happy to note that you felt comfortable from the very beginning. Singapore’s heat and humidity can be challenging at times, so designing a route that stays shaded, breezy, and easy to walk is something we take very seriously. It also means a lot that the food stops felt genuinely local. Many of these places are tucked away in corners that overseas visitors rarely stumble upon, and sharing those hidden favourites is one of our favourite parts of the tour. We are glad to note your views on the pacing. A food tour should never feel rushed and we try our very best to always plan the route with enough breaks, rest points, and transitions so guests can enjoy each stop fully. Thank you again for joining the tour and we look forward to having you back for another foodilicious tour with us
It was a fantastic experience right from the start to the finish. After a seamless pickup by the tour guide, we started off the tour at this amazing roast pork place which had the BEST roast pork I ever had in my life. Afterwards, we headed off to explore the cultural sites at Chinatown and our guide shared really interesting facts about the temples and history of Singapore. The little details shared made me appreciate the existence of these cultural sites more on a deeper level, rather than if I went to the sites alone. It was a very well thought out trip, a good interval of food stops and cultural sites, and I got to see Singapore through a different lens. The food that we ate were not all on the Michelin guide, but was even better, and very FRESH. The guide shared the history of the stalls and some of them actually had chefs from the Michelin stalls! I really appreciated the amount of thought put into the selection of food places and planning of the route. We didn't want to just follow the Michelin guide as it was overly commercialised. This experience is definitely a must-try if you want to see Singapore through the lens of a local. Shoutout to the hard work by our amazing guide!
Thank you so much for this wonderful review. We are glad that the experience felt seamless from start to finish, and that the mix of food stops and cultural sites helped you see Chinatown through a deeper and diverse lens. We love your shoutout to the roast pork / char siew . At Istoria, we genuinely believe this stall serves one of the best roast pork / char siew plates in Singapore. Their cut is incredibly generous, the crackling is crisp and the balance of lean meat to just the right amount of fat gives every bite that perfect snap and juiciness. Your appreciation for the non Michelin selections also means a lot. Singapore’s hawker culture is far richer and some of the stalls in Chinatown include chefs with deep heritage, including those who once cooked in Michelin Bib Recommended kitchens. What matters most to us is flavour, consistnecy and the stories behind the food and we’re over the moon that it resonated with you. Thank you again for joining the tour and it was a joy hosting you, and I hope our paths cross again on another food adventure.
We had an incredible hawker food trip with Ronald, and I cannot recommend him enough! From start to finish, his itinerary was exceptionally well thought out. Not only was the food selection phenomenal, but he also planned a smart, mostly sheltered route that seamlessly wove in multiple historical attractions. He even looked after the smallest details, like handing out wet tissues to us after our meals—a total lifesaver in the Singapore heat! Ronald is incredibly knowledgeable about Singapore's history, sharing fascinating stories without ever making it feel like a boring lecture. It’s also clear he’s a beloved local figure; the hawkers at Hong Lim Food Centre knew him very well and the rapport he has with them added a wonderful, authentic layer to the experience. Instead of just chasing tourist traps, Ronald focused on exceptional hawker food that goes way beyond Michelin-star standards. It was a thoroughly comfortable, delicious, and seamless trip. I can 100% trust his food standards and would definitely book with him again. Thank you, Ronald!
Thank you so much for this incredible review, it truly means a lot. We’re delighted that you enjoyed the food, the sheltered route, and the stories woven along the way. Sharing Singapore’s living memory through its hawkers, streets, and people is always a joy, and meeting guests like you makes the experience even richer. We’re especially grateful for your note about the food selection. At Istoria, our menu intentionally goes beyond Michelin recommended stalls as Singapore’s food culture is far deeper, more diverse, and more personal than any list can capture. Many of the dishes I feature come from hawkers who have been cooking for decades, perfecting their craft quietly, without chasing awards and whose flavours are every bit as exceptional. By curating stalls based on taste, heritage, consistency, and the relationships built over years, we can bring guests to places that locals truly love. These are the kitchens where recipes are guarded like family heirlooms, where hawkers greet you by name, and where the food tells a story that no accolade can fully express. Thank you again for trusting our standards and for being such wonderful company. We’d be honoured to host you on another food journey. Joo Chiat next?
Really enjoyed this 3+ hour walking tour! It was a wonderful way to spend a leisurely afternoon exploring Chinatown, with a convenient meeting point in the heart of the city. The tour included delicious local favourites like chicken rice, and traditional toast with coffee, along with interesting stops at local shops that gave us a glimpse into the area’s rich culture and history. A special thank you to Ling, who was incredibly patient and accommodating, especially as my mum needed to walk at a slower pace. She made sure everyone felt comfortable and never rushed us, which we truly appreciated. Highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a relaxed, unhurried experience in central Singapore. We left with wonderful memories, and we are so happy to have made a new friend along the way!
Thank you so much for spending your afternoon with us in Chinatown, and for sharing such a thoughtful review. We’re delighted to hear that the leisurely pace of the tour gave you space to enjoy the neighbourhood’s flavours, stories, and hidden corners. It means a lot to us that you enjoyed the curated menu that consists of chicken rice, traditional toast and much more. Ling will be especially touched by your kind words. She takes great care in making sure everyone feels comfortable and unhurried, and we’re glad your mum felt supported throughout the walk. Wishing you and your family wonderful adventures ahead, and we hope to welcome you again someday.
