Exploring Mylapore: A Cultural & Historical Walking Tour
Description
During this walk, you will visit the temple in the company of our knowledgeable guide. We will also walk through the surrounding areas, where you can see Mylapore in all its crowded chaos. The jewellers, silk merchants, fruit and vegetable sellers and the flower vendors in the bazaars provide a colourful backdrop to the temple. The walk takes us through small lanes with old-style homes, through silk shops, stores selling music and religious memorablia, ‘kutcheri’ auditoriums, etc. Visit the Kapaleeshwara Temple, the Santhome Church, and walk through the by-lanes of Mylapore during this 3-hour tour. The tour is mostly on foot with a short stretch in an auto-rickshaw (local tuk-tuk) that are arranged and included in the tour and it will end with south Indian refreshments.

Our walk begins at the Kapaaleswar Temple, the most renowned temple in Mylapore. This temple serves as the heart of Mylapore, and our guide will unravel the fascinating rituals that take place there.
we will visit the Ramakrishna Monastery and Universal Temple, dedicated to one of India's most influential philosophers. Our cultural guide will elaborate on his significant contributions to Indian philosophy and his belief in the unity of religions. He played a pivotal role in bridging the ancient and modern worlds.
The walking tour in Chennai takes us to the main church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madras & Mylapore. Inside the stunning neo-Gothic Basilica, you'll be mesmerized by its beauty. The shrine houses a small relic of bone and the lance that pierced Saint Thomas in the year 52, which is truly the highlight of this Chennai walk.

Great tour of Mylapore with a friendly and knowledgeable guide! I would not have understood most of what I was seeing in the temple without him, and the coffee and snacks we got at a local spot were a good chance to talk and for me to ask questions about local life. Great value for the cost!

We booked this tour for our first day in India to find out more about history, culture and religion. Rajesh met us on time and gave us an excellent tour of the Mylapore area. He was very knowledgeable about all of the sights we visited and we learnt a lot from him, especially about Hinduism. He took us to a cafe for delicious coffee and snacks and this was also a great opportunity to chat to him and he was very happy to answer all of our questions. Following the tour Rajesh was also really helpful in organising a driver for us to visit Mahibalipuram and go on to our next stop in Pondicherry at a very reasonable price.
