Wow wow and wow!, we booked the 8pm night hike and our guide Vini was incredible, a very friendly chap who literally leaves no stone unturned and his eyesight/ability to spot the tiniest of details leading us to some of the best wildlife encounters of our lives. When we arrived, Vini explained to us how it’s best to go into these tours with low expectations and let the forest show you what it would like to show you which we thought was not only a fantastic way of looking at it, but it also worked very much in our favour when we hadn’t even left camp and eagle eyed Vini spotted an eyelash pit viper. From there it just got better and we were super lucky to see a mottled owl, a mexican hairy porcupine, a sloth (with a baby!), webfoot salamanders, tree frogs, glass frog eggs, funky stick insects, pit vipers and more! We appreciate we were incredibly lucky and the forest was giving a lot last night but I don’t think you’d ever find nothing with Vini & co as your guides. Highly recommend and if we can, will be back- also compliments to grandma for her homemade energy bars. Buena Vista, Vini! 🫶

This night tour was the highlight of our trip so far! At first, we had issues finding transportation to the wildlife refuge, but when we called George he immediately came to pick us up! George was very sweet and told us all about his life and Monteverde during the drive. Vini was our guide and we could not have asked for a better one! He absolutely loves his job and worked hard to find every single animal. I genuinely don’t know how he spotted some of the snakes and bugs we saw! He also used our phone to take the coolest pictures and videos through the telescope of every animal! After the tour was done he drove us back to our hostel and was passionately telling us everything about the area. This experience was amazing and Vini and George are the sweetest and most passionate people. Will be dreaming about this tour forever!

Be aware that you have to pay a US$15 entrance fee on top of the US$40 for the guided walk. The walk itself was okay - great if you like to see bugs and little critters, but not much else. The guide was knowledgeable and enthusiastic which helped. One of the night vision goggles didnt work so we had to share. All in all, didn't feel like great value for the money we paid.

Rather than focusing on large mammals or high-volume wildlife sightings, we emphasize the fascinating smaller creatures that are often overlooked — insects, amphibians, arachnids, and the intricate relationships that make this forest so alive at night. We understand that this style of experience may not match every traveler’s expectations, but we are grateful you recognized the enthusiasm and knowledge of your guide. We also want to clarify that the US$15 reserve entrance fee is clearly communicated before booking, both during the reservation process and in our information shared with guests. The guided experience and the protected reserve entrance are managed separately, which is why they appear as two charges. Regarding the night vision goggles, we sincerely apologize that one unit was not functioning properly during your tour. That is not the experience we aim to provide, and we will make sure our equipment is checked more carefully moving forward. As a small locally rooted project, our goal is not only tourism, but also supporting conservation, environmental education, and a more regenerative relationship with the forest and community. Super cool tour with our guide Frédérique ( George happened to be out of town that weekend)! Super knowledgeable and very engaging, the tour was supposed to be about 2 hours, but we stayed out for a bit longer because we were all having so much fun. Our group ended up being 5 people, which was perfect. We saw tons of insect activity, including fireflies and tarantulas, frogs, birds, monkeys and snakes. The price was great, and it was a good way for us to vette the guide service before committing to a much longer/more expensive tour later in the week. Flashlights are provided, but I brought my own, which I would recommend. The guides match your energy, so the more engaged you are and the more questions you ask, the better time you will have. 10/10 would recommend, a must-do if you find yourself in Monteverde!

A real forest experience with lots of animals, plants and all the sound of the wildlife. Fantastic how a 20 year old with so much enthusiasm and attention to detail can explain, climb and introduce us to his forest. He also acted professionally and prudently when a participant felt nauseous. His emphatic demeanor and expertise unique - inexplicable to us how he could spot 2 cm animals in the thicket. Top experience with a top guide!
