In Casa Grotta del Casalnuovo you can experience a real house of the Sassi through its original furniture and the tools of daily use that the family that lived there used in everyday life. What are commonly called Case Grotta are real ethnographic collections, small museums with objects of common use and work from the times when the Sassi were inhabited, before the depopulation occurred in the fifties. Inside, the original rooms and furnishings of the house are reconstructed before the ancient districts were depopulated in the late 1950s.

Admission included30 min

The church of Madonna delle Grazie is located in the Via del Sasso Caveoso in Matera. The church was formerly named after St. Eustace, as can be seen from the pastoral visit of Msgr. Saracen in 1543-1544. The entrance consists of a bell tower. It includes a terracotta bas-relief representing the Madonna and Child. The interior of the cave church has only some alterations. Among these is an imposing Baroque altar placed at the original iconostasis. Behind the altar we find a rock wall with several openings that lead to the sacristy; once there was the chancel. In the ceiling there are two carved domes and visible apse arches. On the right wall there is a Crucifixion, now ruined, under which there is a faded fresco.

Ordinary

Our guide had a lot of knowledge and family connection bot the story was repetitive and sometimes hard to understand with the accent. It was a very hot day so everyone was a bit frazzled

Great walking tour

Our guide Brunella was fantastic. Very knowledgeable about Matera's history. The pace was fine and we had plenty of time to take pictures. We visited a rock/cave church and a rock/cave house as well and they were great.

Five star plus!

This was special tour which shared information about the town’s history from a personal viewpoint. It was unrushed and informative and we were so glad we spent the time with Brunnela!

Must do on your first day

Tour guide Brunella was fantastic. She is very knowledgeable and relayed the history of Matera. By incorporating her personal stories, tour is moving. You can feel how people were living in Matera before it became what it is today. She's respectful to people.

Great guide, fantastic family stories

Bruna was a really interesting guide who took us to see wonderful views and some great cave buildings. Throughout the trip she shared stories from her father’s youth and how that impacted his life - this made it a very memorable visit.

Brunella gave a great tour with a visit to a cave church and house. She is from Matera and her father used to live in Sassi, so she had some insightful stories. It was an informative tour.

Walking Tour Matera

We were late to join the walk due to parking, but luckily we were able to catch up with Angela and join the tour which was excellent. Very educational and Angela was very good. Only feedback, is that Viator should tell people that you can’t park anywhere near where the walk starts. You need to park in the town itself. This caused us to be 20 minutes later.
