Itinerary
Depart from Durban and head first to Howick Falls. Howick Falls, located in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is a breathtaking 95-meter waterfall surrounded by lush greenery and scenic viewpoints. Known locally as KwaNogqaza, meaning “Place of the Tall One” in Zulu, the falls hold cultural and historical significance to the local community. The thundering cascade of water plunges into a deep pool below, creating misty sprays that fill the air. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views from various lookout points, explore nearby walking trails, and visit the quaint town of Howick, which offers charming cafes, markets, and local crafts, making Howick Falls a beautiful natural and cultural experience.
From Howick Falls we head to Mandela Capture Site. The Nelson Mandela Capture Site, located near Howick in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is a significant historical and cultural landmark commemorating the arrest of Nelson Mandela on August 5, 1962. This site marks the pivotal moment when Mandela, a leading anti-apartheid activist, was captured by police, ultimately leading to his 27-year imprisonment and the subsequent journey toward South Africa’s democracy. The site features an iconic steel sculpture by artist Marco Cianfanelli, which, from a specific angle, reveals Mandela's profile, symbolizing the strength and resilience of his spirit. A visitor center and museum provide insight into Mandela's life and legacy, offering an inspiring tribute to South Africa’s struggle for freedom and equality.
From Mandela Capture Site we proceed to Drakensberg Mountains where we also do hiking. The Drakensberg Mountains, stretching across South Africa and forming a natural boundary with Lesotho, are a breathtaking landscape of towering peaks, rugged cliffs, and rolling valleys. Known as the "Dragon Mountains" or "uKhahlamba" in Zulu, meaning "Barrier of Spears," the Drakensberg is renowned for its dramatic scenery, lush green foothills, and unique rock formations. The mountains are home to diverse flora and fauna, including rare bird species and beautiful wildflowers that thrive in its pristine environment. With a wealth of outdoor activities like hiking, rock climbing, and horseback riding, along with ancient San rock art sites, the Drakensberg offers a deeply immersive experience in South Africa’s natural and cultural heritage.

I had a great experience on the Drakensberg Mountains and Hiking Trip. Mabena was a pleasant, thoughtful driver and guide. The hike had stunning views along the trail and the site- specific local trail guide, Scelo, pointed out things I would have never spotted or known otherwise. The world heritage site rock art was incredible and a must-visit location. The Nelson Mandela Capture site was a thought-provoking experience that I won’t forget. Overall, yes, it was a long drive from Durban but so worth the journey.
Thank you very much Penny for the best review and as Owomusa safaris we are looking forward to give our guests the best, and we are looking forward to see you soon i thank you
