Dorsoduro is one of the six districts of Venice and includes the highest land areas of the city as Giudecca Island and Sacca Fisola island. The university area is less crowded than other classic tourist areas of the historic center, but it is rich in breathtaking views, shops ,traditional restaurants , picturesque canals and artistic destinations (Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Campo Santo Stefano and Accademia Galleries). It is very interesting to find out the place where the gondolas are built. The Squero San Trovaso, amazing for its wooden architecture, is the most famous gondola shipyard that still exists and there you can watch gondola builders at work! Fondamenta degli Incurabili, a hospital built for the care of men and women affected by syphilis. At that time, there was no adequate therapy to fight this terrible venereal disease and for this reason the building received the name of the incurables. Now, the building, after a careful restoration, is the headquarters of the Academy of Fine Arts.
