Visit Dharavi and also enjoy a lovely vegetarian meal with a local family! Known to many as ‘one of the largest slums in Asia’, we prefer to think of Dharavi as Mumbai’s beating heart. This experience is operated by Reality Tours & Travel, a responsible travel social enterprise that reinvests a significant portion of its profits into local community development Visitors experience a wide range of these business activities: recycling, pottery-making, embroidery, bakery, soap factory, leather tanning, poppadom-making and many more. We’ll also visit the residential areas of Dharavi. People from all over India have come to live in Dharavi, making it a microcosm of India. This diversity is apparent in the temples, mosques, churches and pagodas that stand side by side. Towards the end of the tour, we will walk to a nearby family home for a vegetarian meal. Not only will you get additional insight into Dharavi, but you’ll provide a local family with some extra income.

It was a great experience. The tour lasted around 3 hours. I got to know the history and eat some really delicious food. So if you're considering it don't hesitate. The guide was really helpful and knowledgable

I learnt so much about Dharavi across the morning. Reality tours work at breaking certain misconceptions about life in the “slums” but also give 80% of their proceeds back into the community. Rehana is a wonderful local guide who shared so much about life in Dharavi, both growing up and as an adult. The lunch afterwards was extremely generous with the kind auntie preparing a large spread of Indian dishes and welcoming us into her home.

Visiting the slum is an experience to live, in order to understand the way of life different from ours, and to open up to this beautiful difference. Taking a guide from the NGO Reality tour ensures that 80% is reinvested in the slum. Our guide was great!

This tour was one of the most memorable experiences on our 2-months India journey. An absolute must-see in Mumbai. We got such a lively insight into the life in the slum. Great tour guide Rishi who actually lives in the slum. Socially responsible company who puts 80% of profit in their educational project in the slum. Fantastic food in a family home.

We did a really interesting and informative tour of Dharavi with our guide, Rishi. He was very knowledgeable and friendly and we learned a great deal about the various industries operating there as well as the social aspects of life in Dharavi. We also greatly enjoyed our lunch with a family in Dharavi. Frankly, I was a little nervous about doing this, but it was one of the highlights of the tour for me; our hostess was very warm and gracious and the food was delicious.

An amazing tour through the industries and homes of Dharavi. It really changed my perspective on the area.
