The ancient site of Haththikuchchi, also known under the modern name Rayangana, is an archaeological site picturesquely situated amidst rock boulders. It's also a pilgrimage site, as it is believed to be the place of King Sirisanghabo's self-sacrifice.
Yapahuwa is sometimes called Sri Lanka's second Sigiriya. You can climb to the very top of the monadnock for an amazing 360-degree panoramic view. Halfway to the top, you will see the elegant palace stairway which is richly decorated with various sculptures and carvings.

This tour is totally off the beaten path. Though not as tall as SIGIRIYA, The climb to YAPAHUWA is also a bit tough. HaththiKuchchi literally means the Belly of an Elephant- so named because the rock there resembles the belly of an elephant. Like all other Buddhist monasteries Haththikuchchi has caves and water streams going through the caves and ledges at the top to prevent rainwater entering the caves.
