Description

The cave paintings at Lascaux in France are often described as the greatest prehistoric art in the world. They are 17,000 years old. The paintings at Bhimbetka are nearly twice as old. This UNESCO World Heritage site in the Vindhya hills outside Bhopal has 750 rock shelters with paintings dating back 30,000 years, showing animals, hunters, warriors and magical creatures in layers that span the full arc of human prehistory from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age. Forty kilometres away, the Bhojpur Temple was built by King Bhoja in the 11th century — the king who founded Bhopal and wrote a treatise on civil engineering that described the construction of flying machines. His temple was never completed, which makes it more fascinating not less. Private car from Bhopal, expert guide, entry fees and lunch included. 5 Senses Tours is recognised by the Department of Tourism, a winner of the Outlook Responsible Tourism Award and the Tripadvisor Travellers Choice Award.

The Bhimbetka Rock Shelter has the oldest-known rock art in India. In fact it is one of the largest prehistoric complexes globally, comprising over 750 rock shelters spread across seven hills. These shelters provide insights into human habitation from the Stone Age to historic times. The cave paintings depict a variety of themes, including animals, early human activities, and later scenes like warriors on horseback, possibly from the Bronze Age. The paintings evolved from simple depictions of animals and hunting scenes to more complex themes, including religious symbols and magical creatures. The paintings are executed in natural colors.

The Bhojpur Temple is an incredibe work of architecture. Located on a mountain top the temple was built by King Bhoj in 1055 B.C. There is a Shivling inside this temple that is made from a single stone and is 7.5 feet long. There are fascinating carvings on the rocks of this temple. It represents the Bhumija style of architecture, characterized by curvilinear towers and massive pillars. Raja Bhoj, the patron of the temple, was a celebrated ruler known for his contributions to art, literature, and science. He also founded the city of Bhopal and wrote a treatise on civil engineering

Bhimbetka a real Wonder

Guide Yadav was well informed, friendly and is a third generation archeologist-expert. Bhimbetka is out of this world; well maintained and way before man organised himself into complicated outcomes.

Mesmerizing paintings in pre historic caves

This was a totally awsome day. We visited prehistoric caves which had incredible paintings. It was surreal. The ancient people captured their daily life on the cave walls. The tour company sent a fantastic guide who spoke excellent English and knew his stuff. The car was also very comfortable. I would highly recommend this.

Operator response

I am glad you enjoyed Bhimbetka. Thanks for taking the time to review this tour. It was our pleasure hosting you.

Excellent countryside and prehistoric art

This was our first visit to Bhopal and the central part of India. This is so much different from the usual crowded indian cities. We enjoyed the prehistoric art at the caves and the lovely countryside. Our guide was awesome and made us comfortable by adapting to our pace. We took a lot of photos and tested his patience! The tour operator took excellent care of us including pick and drop to hotel, air-conditioned car, entry charges and an excellent local cuisine lunch. Very highly recommended.
