Curacao Walking Tour - Best way to get to know Willemstad!

Itinerary

10 min

Discover Otrobanda’s colorful streets and stunning murals, where art and history come alive. Otrobanda is one of the historically important quarters of Willemstad, the capital of Curaçao. The district was developed in the 18th century and picked up in the early 19th century when the once walled city of Punda became overpopulated. Otrobanda was connected to Punda in 1888 via the Queen Emma Bridge (affectionately known as "The Swinging Old Lady") and in 1974 by the Queen Juliana Bridge.

10 min

A monument honoring Curacao born Admiral Luis Brión, who fought for the freedom of the countries of Gran Colombia, is located in Brión Plaza in the Otrobanda District, Willemstad, Curacao.

10 min

Punda was established in 1634, when the Dutch captured the island from Spain. The original name of Punda was de punt in Dutch.

10 min

Just steps away from the Handelskade’s famous pastel buildings, you’ll find one of Willemstad’s most charming scenes. The Floating Market. Here, colorful wooden boats bob gently on the water, freshly arrived from Venezuela and nearby islands, loaded with bright fruits, vegetables, and spices. As you walk along the quay, the air fills with the scent of ripe mangos, sweet papayas, and the chatter of vendors calling out their daily offerings. The market feels alive. A blend of Caribbean color, Latin rhythm, and local island life. It’s more than a place to shop; it’s a slice of Curaçao’s culture. A living tradition where friendly vendors, vibrant produce, and old-world charm come together along the waterfront. A quick stroll here turns into a moment you’ll never forget and one of the most authentic experiences in Willemstad.

10 min

The Queen Emma Bridge is a pontoon bridge across St. Anna Bay in Curaçao. It connects the Punda and Otrobanda quarters of the capital city, Willemstad. The bridge is hinged and opens regularly to enable the passage of oceangoing vessels.

10 min

In the heart of Willemstad, tucked between bright Caribbean buildings and the warm buzz of island life, you’ll find one of Curaçao’s most joyful treasures. The Chichi Store. Step inside and you’re instantly surrounded by rows of colorful, hand-painted Chichi sculptures, each one bursting with personality. Every Chichi is lovingly painted by local female artists, and no two are the same. Some are bold and vibrant, others soft and elegant. Together they tell the story of Curaçao’s creativity, culture, and strong island women. Wandering through the shop feels like entering a little art gallery full of smiles. Whether you’re looking for a special keepsake or simply soaking up the colors, the Chichi Store is a fun and heart-warming stop that captures the spirit of Curaçao in the most charming way.

10 min

Established in 1828, this former fort is a waterfront mall with a courtyard, stores & bars/eateries.

10 min

Tucked away in the heart of Otrobanda lies Kura Hulanda Village, a colorful maze of cobblestone lanes, restored colonial houses, cozy cafés, and boutique shops. Walking through it feels like stepping into a secret little world quiet, charming, and full of island character. Bright façades in blues, yellows, and reds line the narrow streets, each corner offering a new surprise: a hidden courtyard, a handmade craft stall, or a quiet bench shaded by bougainvillea. The village hums with history and creativity, blending Curaçao’s Caribbean soul with Dutch colonial charm. It’s the perfect place to wander, explore, and take in the beauty of Curaçao at your own pace. Whether you’re snapping photos, enjoying a snack, or simply soaking up the atmosphere, Kura Hulanda Village makes every visitor feel like they’ve discovered one of Willemstad’s most magical corners.

10 min

Fort Amsterdam is a fort located in Willemstad, Curaçao. It was constructed in 1634 by the Dutch West India Company and served not only as a military fort but also as the headquarters of the DWIC. Currently it serves as the seat of the government and governor of Curaçao.

Tour of Curacao

I initially booked the city walking tour, but due to the company not meeting the minimum guest requirement, they offered me the Colors and Flavors tour instead, which I accepted—and I’m so glad I did! The tour was great from start to finish. Our guide, Naomi, was amazing—funny, engaging, and extremely knowledgeable. She kept the group entertained while also sharing interesting facts and local history throughout the experience. One of the highlights was stopping at the distillery, where we got a tour and were able to sample some of the products. We also made a stop near downtown, which gave us a chance to take in the scenery and explore a bit. Overall, this was a fantastic experience and I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Curaçao!

Operator response

Thank you so much for this fantastic review! We always hate when minimum guest counts impact our initial plans, but we are absolutely thrilled that the switch to our 'Colors and Flavors' tour turned out to be such a blessing in disguise! Naomi is an absolute gem, and she will be so happy to hear that her humor, energy, and local history facts kept you thoroughly entertained. We are glad you loved the distillery tour, the samples, and your time exploring downtown. Thank you for highly recommending us to other Curaçao visitors, and we hope to welcome you back for that city walking tour next time!

Fascinating walking tour

The walking tour was fascinating! My guide was Nicole. She kindly picked me up directly from the hotel and showed me the Downtown of Willemstad, including its historical buildings, the slavery museum, the quay, the local market and cafeteria, where to buy souvenirs and much more. Nicole, who was raised in Curacao, is a good story-teller who is rich in knowledge about local history, culture and languages. I really enjoyed the tour and I highly recommend it. P.S. Nicole takes very nice photos)
