Enjoyed our visit. Nice grounds . Good self guided tour with booklet with plenty of info.
A fantastic visit and a fantastic guide Mellissa !!! She was very knowledgably, smiley, engaging and had a great sense of humour and made the tour very interesting. A very impressive building for a Jail and lots to see and do.
A must see if you like history. A must see if you don’t as you’ll become a history fan. The guided tour by Ciara was fascinating. Can’t believe I’d never been (I’m from Cork). It’s a bit of a hike (uphill) from the city so you might need to plan your trip. If you are driving there is free parking nearby. I would simply love this venue for arts and theatre!
I know it’s unfair to compare this to other jail tours in Ireland but it’s really hard not to. The architecture was gorgeous but the history was all quite surface level. I do appreciate them trying something different in tackling the stories of the jail and its prisoners.
Good experience and well worth a visit, would recommend getting audio guide
This is a very Interesting look back at the history and conditions of this jail. It is extremely well set out and staff are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.
Really good experience, lots of history and a great way to waste an hour
Went to see that Gaol it's worth a look, it was €12 per adult and €7.50 for child, it was nice to see a part of history of Cork, staff were friendly and the place is well looked after.
Quite a long walk there and back from Cork city centre but spent some couple of hours once there and worth visiting as it has been rescued from dereliction. The included leaflet is enough to guide you round and there is a small gift shop serving hot drinks as well. Still lots of renovation required for the outer buildings but good to see. Tells the tales of the poor souls sent there and their punishment.
You can immediately tell that this historic site has a lot of supporters who are passionate about this project. Instead of just "This is the xxx room" the tour told the story of numerous inmates and their experiences. There was even one cell where you could close the door to get an idea of the experience of the inmate. Very well done.
