Suchitoto is the best preserved colonial town, which for some reason its soil has allowed most of its houses to remain intact for more than 250 years despite being in a volcanic land affected by earthquakes.

Cihuatan (in Nahuat: place next to the Woman) is the largest archaeological site in El Salvador, but one of the least known. This site was inhabited by an emerging civilization after the collapse of the Mayans. We will enter the main square, we will observe the main pyramid that we can climb, and we will know the best preserved ball games in the country. Suchitoto means in our Nahuat language "Bird on Flower". Upon reaching this magical destination, you will immerse yourself in the beauty of the place. You will visit the beautiful buildings that startle the city like the theater, or the imposing colonial church of Santa Lucia. We will visit the emblematic waterfall Los tercios, recognized for its special rock formation formed. A sculpture carved perfectly, created by Mother Nature; His interest lies in the spectacular composition of the vertical wall of the waterfall formed by hexagonal blocks of fine carved stone, which make up the bottom of the waterfall. The height of the jump can exceed 10 meters and although in the dry season it forms a singular image, it is in the rainy season when the water descends through the blocks that reach its greatest splendor and scenic beauty. He also happened to be the one who manages the tour company too; his story growing up in El Salvador and struggling through its tumultous history touched my heart! It is a full-day tour (about 8ish hours) and a great way to experience El Salvador if you're only there a couple of days. You'll walk a lot. Our guide was Herbert and he was really good. Our first stop was the Volcano above San Salvador (El Boqueron National Park). You'll get a terrific view over San Salvador and you can do the glass floor walk over the caldera. Very good way to start the day. Next you will visit the Cihuatan ruins. The guide Herbert was really knowledgeable on the Nautl people and language and you will see the pyramid, ball court and temple grounds. It was really interesting and informative. Finally you'll visit the old capital of El Salvador Suchitoto, which is a beautiful quaint colonial town. We stopped and ate at La Posada de Suchitlan for lunch, a restaurant with incredible vistas, gardens, and good authentic Salvadoran food. Then you'll get a little walking tour of Suchitoto including the quaint church in the middle of town. Be sure to buy some coffee because it is delicious. Again, great single day El Salvador experience, great guide, and bring your walking shoes.
We had a friendly and knowledgeable tour guide from Eco Tours Petate. He was early at our hotel. He even provided us with chilled water. After leading us around the Mayan ruins and the charming colonial town he selected a restaurant overlooking a lake where we dined in style together.

This is the best tour I’ve had in El Salvador. I have a fascination with the Mesoamerican civilization, which has taken me to places in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras. El Salvador was the last Maya country I had not yet seen. I had a private tour with Eco Tourism and Herbert as my guide. He was very knowledgeable about the places we visited and about El Salvador in general. He had answers to all my questions. The pacing of the tour was exactly what I expected. Herbert was very passionate about what he does and highly professional.
This was a great tour! Antonio was such a great tour guide. Suchitoto was a beautiful historical city. We got nice pictures of the lake.
