Chicago Walking Tour: The Magnificent Mile

Description
Discover how a dirt road known as Pine Street transformed into a "Paris on the Prairie" and later into the Magnificent Mile, the city’s premier shopping district. Hear the secrets and stories behind the striking buildings on North Michigan Avenue that have become architectural icons. Developed over the past 100 years, the street includes historically-inspired architecture in Parisian, Gothic, neoclassical and Art Deco styles sprinkled among Modern and 21st Century buildings. You’ll see skyscrapers, vertical malls, hotels, residential towers and some buildings that were designed to embody the brands sold inside. As a certified nonprofit, all CAC ticket purchases directly support our education efforts and community engagement projects.

Fun and Informative. Enjoyed our tour with docent Bob Morehead who described architecture style and elements, history and relevant stories of the buildings we have walked by many times with only a passing glance. We have better appreciation of their elegance and significance to Chicago.

I took this tour with Mitch, and it was so interesting! His explanations were clear and organized, yet he truly tailored the experience to his audience (and in consideration of the cold weather!). He was a wealth of information, with interesting facts and quotes. Now I can walk up and down Michigan Avenue enjoying the buildings I got to know through his tour.
Thank you for the thoughtful review! We’re so glad you enjoyed the tour and that Mitch’s clear, engaging approach and thoughtful pacing in the cold made the experience memorable. It’s wonderful to hear that his insights and stories have given you a new appreciation for the buildings along Michigan Avenue. We hope you’ll join us again for another tour soon!
We took this tour with Mitch. There was one other couple on the tour and it was a beautiful warm November day. Mitch was really knowledgeable and we learned a great deal about the building styles along Michigan Ave. as well as about the personalities of the movers and shakers in Chicago. There’s a fair amount of walking - an hour and a half that flew by but wear comfortable shoes and be dressed for the weather. This was another great CAC volunteer led tour
Thank you for taking the Magnificent Mile tour! It’s wonderful to hear you enjoyed the mix of architecture and history, and that the walk through Chicago’s iconic avenue made for a memorable outing. We hope to see you again the next time you visit!
Learned so much about the early history of Michigan Ave and its buildings. You will not walk the entire mile, just about halfway up Michigan Ave. Many architectural details will be discussed, described, and pointed out (Gothic, Art Deco, Art Modern, etc).
We’re thrilled you had a great experience exploring Michigan Avenue with us! The history and architectural variety along that stretch are truly fascinating, and we’re happy the tour helped you see it in a new way. We hope to see you on more CAC tours!
Most enjoyable and informative. Perfect to do earlier in your trip. Super knowledgeable guide Ron. Very nice and personable. The tour focuses on the evolution of styles of the magnificent architecture up the stretch known as the magnificent mile. Lots of extra tips and guidance for your stay in the city to booth. The best compliment I can give is that the tour is very interesting indeed. I recommend this.
