Burleigh Head: Walkabout Small Group Tour

Itinerary

40 min

As you walk along the scenic shoreline and rainforest trails, your guide will bring the land to life with Dreaming stories and cultural insights. Discover ancient shell middens, traditional ochre sites, and significant places that have been used for generations by the Yugambeh language-speaking people. Keep an eye out for native wildlife, including brush turkeys, water dragons, and sea eagles soaring overhead. During the right season, you may even spot humpback whales migrating along the coast. Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the headland, where waves crash against volcanic rock formations, pandanus palms line the trails, and the scent of the ocean mingles with the rich greenery of the rainforest. Learn about bush tucker, medicinal plants, and the deep spiritual connection Aboriginal people have with this land.

20 min

As part of your journey on the Jellurgal Walkabout tour, you’ll pass by Echo Beach, a peaceful stretch of Tallebudgera Creek nestled at the base of Burleigh Headland. This tranquil spot, with its crystal-clear waters and lush surroundings, has long been a place of significance for the Yugambeh language-speaking people. Your Aboriginal guide will share stories of how the creek was traditionally used for fishing, gathering food, and cultural practices. Learn about the rich marine life that thrives in these waters and the importance of tidal flows to the ecosystem. The calm, shallow waters of Echo Beach also make it a popular place for families to swim and relax, just as it has been a gathering place for generations. As you take in the breathtaking views of the creek meeting the rainforest, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the deep spiritual and cultural connection the local Aboriginal people have with this land.

30 min

Flowing alongside Burleigh Headland, Tallebudgera Creek is a stunning natural waterway that has sustained the Yugambeh language-speaking people for thousands of years. Its name, meaning "good fish" in the local Aboriginal language, reflects its rich marine life and historical importance as a vital source of food and resources. During the Jellurgal Walkabout tour, you’ll gain insight into the deep cultural connections between the land and water. Your guide will share traditional fishing and hunting practices, including how local Aboriginal people used spears, nets, and tidal knowledge to gather food from the creek. You’ll also learn about the significance of this area as a meeting place for families and community gatherings. As you explore its pristine shoreline, you’ll experience the same natural beauty that has drawn people to this special place for generations.

30 min

Winding along the rugged coastline of Burleigh Headland, the Burleigh Heads Oceanview Track offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean while immersing you in the rich cultural heritage of the Yugambeh language-speaking people. This scenic trail is a key part of the Jellurgal Walkabout tour, where your Aboriginal guide will share stories of the land, Dreaming, and the deep spiritual significance of the headland. As you walk beneath towering pandanus palms and through lush rainforest, you’ll discover ancient sites, traditional ochre markings, and shell middens—evidence of thousands of years of continuous connection to Country. Along the way, keep an eye out for bottlenose dolphins riding the waves, sea eagles soaring overhead, and in the right season, humpback whales migrating along the coast. With the sounds of crashing waves and the salty ocean breeze, this track offers a powerful experience that blends natural beauty with cultural insight.

Highlight of my trip to Gold Coast

I was lucky to have a one-on-one tour with Alya, a First Nations Ranger at the centre. I never would have guessed I was her very first tour client — her knowledge, passion, and enthusiasm were incredible. I learnt so much about culture, language, and the deep spiritual connection First Nations People have with the land. Her Dreamtime stories were captivating and unforgettable. The staff were also so warm and welcoming. A must-visit experience, and a special thank you to Alya!

She was so ecstatic once she returned and spoke about how lovely the whole experience was for her. Something a little different

Highly recommended to people who are interested in leaning aboriginal culture of nations living close to the Gold Coast. The dreams passed down generations by generations share the wisdom and knowledge from the ancient time to today. We also experienced the body painting culture on our arms, which patterns represent different meaning for different nations. If you are interested in something a little different, visit here!

Cultural Immersion

Yesterday I had the privilege of immersing myself in a couple of hours of Aboriginal culture and story telling during Jellurgal's Walkabout tour. Our guide, Kailen, was very knowledgeable and a wonderful storyteller who made us feel so welcome to explore culture and enjoy time on Country with him. From the moment you arrive at the cultural centre, the team make you feel so welcome and at home. I applaud them for creating such a beautiful and welcoming space. I will return for some more cultural immersion as soon as I am able. Until next time.

Exploring Aboriginal Culture Near Brisbane

Our cruise ship itinerary included a day in Brisbane and, since I had read about the Jellurgal Center, we decided to spend our day exploring Aboriginal Culture. We were extremely pleased with our decision. The team at the Center were very knowledgeable and did everything in their power to make our experience memorable. The walking tour afforded our guide the opportunity to share information about the creatures, plants and minerals that were significant to the local Aboriginal peoples and to share some of their fascinating Dream Time stories. The Center is very convenient to several beaches as well as numerous other Gold Coast attractions. While the Jellurgal Center is about an hour and 20 minutes’ drive from Brisbane, there are public transport options available.

A wonderful wander

Due to rainy weather conditions we weren't sure this tour would happen, but the staff kept in constant contact with us, and were able to make happen. The talk and walk were wonderful - informative and emotional. Particularly loved the stories of the Dreaming. Our guide, Tyreece, was warm, friendly, and a wealth of knowledge.

Exceptional experience at Jellurgal.

Authentic insight into the past and present connection of the true residents of Australia to the land. It was a privilege to understand more of the culture and practices of the different nations of the Yugambeh language group. Our tour guide, Tyreese, created a safe space to ask questions and was extremely knowledgeable. 10 out of 10. Would fully recommend.
