Description

Budapest’s markets can feel overwhelming at first — the crowded stalls, the unfamiliar cuts of meat. Many visitors walk through unsure of what they’re seeing or how it fits into everyday Hungarian life. This private tasting tour offers a clear, relaxed way to understand not just the market, but the food, history, and culture that shaped it — through the eyes of someone who grew up with it. My family has lived in Budapest for generations, and food has always been our way of understanding the world. Combined with years cooking professionally in the US and Hungary — including time in a two‑Michelin‑star kitchen and private chef work for visiting actors — I explain Hungarian cuisine through real experience rather than rehearsed stories. As we explore the Great Market Hall, our conversation moves naturally from ingredients to traditions from stories to history. You’ll leave with a full stomach, a deeper sense of Hungarian life, and the feeling that you’ve seen the market the way locals do.

Fun Food Memories

We are so glad we booked this tour and can't stop talking about it with friends and family. Andrew is an excellent guide. Everything he had us try was memorable and interesting. This market would have been overwhelming for us to do on our own and we certainly wouldn't not have gotten the detail and history of the market and Hungarian food without him!

Operator response

Dear Ann, Still talking about it with friends and family - honestly that's one of the best thing I could read. That's the whole point. The Great Market Hall has so many layers to it and most of them are invisible if you don't know where to look. I'm really glad we got to peel a few of those back together. Thank you for writing this up. For a small owner-operated tour, a review like this carries more weight than you might realize. If you're reading this and on the fence - Ann and her husband came in not knowing what to expect. They left with stories. That's pretty much how it goes.

A Food Tour with Wonderful Historical Context

Andrew is a passionate about the quality and integrity of your food tour as he is about food. We had been in Budapest for a few days prior to out tour with him and tried a couple of the traditional foods that are a part of his tour. He accommodated this by quickly pivoting to a modified agenda for the tour. He has a wonderful repertoire of historical knowledge to share that puts the Hungarian food into context so it is more easily understood. This is one of those tours where you can get more out of it by working with him to share what information you would like more or less of. That said, if you are on vacation and just want to relax and enjoy the tour in it’s standard format you will still have a wonderfully rewarding experience.

Operator response

Dear Kevin, What you wrote here is more useful to the next person reading this than anything I could put in a tour description. You named something most people feel on the tour but don't have the words for afterward. That means something. The pivot that morning was one of my favorite moments from that tour. You came in having already done some of the work, and instead of that being a problem it opened up a different conversation entirely. That's exactly what the private format is built for, and you used it exactly right. What you may not know is that the conversation didn't end at the market. We continued it over email afterward, going into things there wasn't time to cover on the walk. That's available to everyone who comes through. You put it better than I could at the end there. You can show up, follow along, eat well, and leave happy. That's a complete experience. And if you come in with questions, opinions, or a willingness to push back a little, there's a different version of this tour waiting for you. Same market, same food. Different conversation. Thank you for taking the time to write this the way you did. Safe travels.

Great market tour

Andrew was excellent! For a group of Americans the market can be overwhelming and I knew that on our own we would breeze by many items without knowing what they were or trying them. He explained the food and culture and had a great array of items to try. Andrew definitely enjoys his job and ensured that we all had a great experience. Highly recommend!

Operator response

Dear Erica, "Enjoys his job" - I'll take that one. Honestly that line means a lot more than most would think. Walking a group through the Great Market Hall for the first time and watching it go from overwhelming to exciting is genuinely one of the best parts of what I do. You came in ready to experience it, and that made all the difference. Thank you for taking the time to write this up. A review this thoughtful means a lot to a small owner-operated tour. If you're reading this and feeling like the Great Market Hall might be a lot to take on alone - that's exactly the right instinct. That's what this is for.

Private tour. Be curious...

Private tour. Be curious and ask questions. Don’t eat before. You will walk throughout the market and try different local dishes. Andrew, a young local, is a great conversationalist and has a wealth of knowledge about Budapest.

Operator response

Dear Susan, You didn't just leave a review, you left a guide. "Be curious, ask questions, don't eat before" - honestly better advice than I could have written myself. That curiosity you brought is exactly what makes a private tour worth doing. I grew up in Budapest, I know these vendors personally, and still the conversations go somewhere new every single time. Thank you for taking the time to write this. For a small owner-operated tour it genuinely matters. If you're reading this wondering whether to book - Susan already told you how to show up. The rest is taken care of.

Fantastic Morning at the Market

Andrew was very kind and personable. He gave us great information about the market and the products within. I really enjoyed his perspective on the food because he is a chef! Highly recommend!

Operator response

Chuck, That chef detail you noticed - that's the whole thing. The food here isn't just interesting, it has a story behind it, and being able to tell that story from a kitchen perspective is something I never take for granted. Really glad y'all felt that come through. Thank you for writing this. Takes thirty seconds to read and genuinely helps more than you know. If you're reading this and haven't booked yet - Chuck kept it short because it's that simple. Come see for yourself.

Wonderful Food Tour!

What a wonderful food tour! We learned so much about the culture, history and culinary aspects of Budapest all while enjoying delicious local food. Andrew was an incredible, personable and very knowledgeable guide who welcomed all of our questions. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting a deeper dive into the food culture of Budapest.

Operator response

Dear Kathleen, "Deeper dive" — that's exactly the intention, and hearing that it landed means a lot. Thank you for taking the time to write this. For a small owner-operated tour, a review like yours genuinely matters more than most people realize. The questions you both brought made the tour better. That kind of curiosity is what turns a walk with food into something worth remembering. If you're reading this and on the fence — Kathleen just saved you the deliberation. Come hungry.

Andrew was very knowledgeable of the Central Market in particular, and food in general. His personal stories were very interesting and he obviously was focused on ensuring that we enjoyed the experience. The 2 hours passed very quickly! We highly recommend this tour.

Operator response

Dear Gary, thank you. TheCentral Market is close to my heart, and I never get tired of showing people what's actually in there beyond the tourist floor. Two hours feeling short is on of the best compliment a guide can get.

We had an amazing private food tour in Budapest with Andew. He is a fantastic tour leader—knowledgeable, flexible, and very easy to talk to. Because the tour is private, he customized the entire experience to our preferences, which makes it perfect for families or close friends who share similar food interests. This tour is ideal for food lovers who enjoy trying new and different dishes. We learned so much about everyday Hungarian life and tasted a wide variety of foods. There were a few items we skipped due to our own mental block, but Andew was always understanding and offered great alternatives. We enjoyed this tour a lot and highly recommend it for first time visitors to Budapest. If you can, book it on your first day—the tips and local knowledge Andew shares will help you for the rest of your trip. If we return to Budapest, we will definitely contact Andew again for his advice on where to eat and what to do.

Operator response

Dau, thank you — this is a generous thing to write, and I'm glad the private format worked for you, I think it's the best way to do a tour. The "mental block" thing is real and more common than people admit. Half the job is reading the table — knowing when to push gently and when to just find something better. No one should feel awkward on a food tour. The first-day tip is one I stand behind completely. Budapest rewards people who know what they're looking at. Come early, and the rest of the trip changes. Thank you for trusting me with your time here. — Andrew

Awesome tour, guide, and market

We had an amazing 2+ hour tour throughout the market place. Our guide was local and very passionate about the city, the sites, and heritage. He shared the amazing history about the building and each of the local food kiosks with duck, pork, chocolate, spices, and handmade clothing, and souvenirs. He was friendly, knowledgeable and fun to be with.

Operator response

Janet, thank you for this — and for giving two hours of your Budapest trip to the market. That means something. "Local and passionate" is about as accurate as it gets. Markets have been part of my life long before I started bringing visitors through it. The duck, the spices, the guy who's been selling handmade goods from the same spot for years — that's not a script, that's just the place. Really glad it landed the way it did. — Andrew

Very enjoyable starting...

Very enjoyable starting tour for us. Andrew was knowledgeable, engaging and personable. We got to taste multiple sweets, pastries and sausages, and learned a bunch about the local history and culture along the way. Didn’t taste any of the goulash (was expecting that to a central theme in Budapest), but we learned about the composition of them, and knew a bit more when we ordered some later from restaurants. Definitely recommend this one.

Operator response

Wesley, thank you — this is exactly the kind of note that makes the work worthwhile. The goulash thing is a fair point. At the markets we get into the ingredients — the paprika, the cuts, the vendors behind them. The dish itself you'll find all over Budapest, and you clearly found it with more context than most visitors do. That's the trade I'll take every time. Glad it set the tone for your trip. — Andrew
