You will also drive through Tiergarten and see the Victory Column built in the 1870s in front of the Reichstag, then moved by Albert Speer in the 1930s to its present location.
Better known as the Memorial Church, this war ruin is a lasting reminder of the destruction of War.
The world's largest boulevard is the heart of former West-Berlin. You'll see fancy shops, restaurants, theaters, and cafés.
Of the many historic palaces built by the Hohenzollern during their 500-year long reign, this is the only one that has survived in Berlin.

Berlin's and maybe Germany's most famous landmark. This gate built in the late 18th century saw Napoleon march through, Hitler, and then it was walled off inbetween the Berlin Wall. Then, in 1989, this is where everyone came to celebrate the end of the Wall and German unification.
Berlin Mitte is where immigrants settled in the 19th century, among them many Jews from Eastern Europe. See the New Synagogue, Old Jewish Cemetery, and the Hackesche Höfe.
Also drive by the world's largest outdoor gallery, a 1.5 km long stretch of the Berlin Wall which was used by more than 100 artists as a canvas for their pictures.
Cross the famous Oberbaumbrücke into Kreuzberg, the place where many Turkish immigrants settled in the 20th century. Today it's a multi-ethnic place with lots of bars, restaurants, cafés and night clubs.

Our Berlin tour with Jan (Jon) was far more than sightseeing—it was a thoughtful walk through history, culture, and memory, guided by someone who knows how to make the city speak. Jan weaved the story of Berlin through its landmarks. At the Holocaust Memorials, he explained how design forces us to feel the disorientation of persecution, while the Queer Memorial revealed histories long suppressed. At the Brandenburg Gate, he unpacked how its meaning shifted—from peace, to victory, to unity—making clear how architecture carries politics. Potsdamer Platz became a lesson in urban reinvention, contrasting Renzo Piano’s terracotta façades with Helmut Jahn’s glass Sony Center, while Jan reminded us of the fragility of modern materials with tales of falling glass panes. At the Reichstag, he pointed out Norman Foster’s glass dome as a symbol of transparency, born of controversy but now iconic. The tour never shied from contradictions: Frederick the Great’s tolerance paired with antisemitism, the Palace of the Republic erased for a reconstructed royal castle, and the scars of WWII intentionally preserved at the Neues Museum. Even lighter stops—Ampelmann souvenirs, chocolate shops at Gendarmenmarkt, graffiti under bridges, and Berlin’s techno temples in industrial ruins—were tied into the larger theme: Berlin remembers not just through plaques, but through everyday spaces. Jan’s strength is context. He could pivot from explaining the White Crosses for Berlin Wall victims to anecdotes about “candy bombers” dropping sweets during the Airlift, then to present debates about housing affordability and community gardens in Kreuzberg. He balanced facts with reflection, often asking us to consider not only what happened, but how Berlin chooses to remember it. This was less a tour and more a moving seminar in the open air. Thanks to Jan’s depth, humor, and candor, Berlin unfolded not as a static museum but as a city still arguing with itself—through scars, reconstructions, and celebrations. Verdict: ★★★★★ — A deeply enriching experience, best for anyone who wants to understand Berlin’s soul, not just its sights.
Wonderful overview of the expansive city of Berlin/West Berlin with a knowledgeable and informative driver/guide. Thomas was a joy to be with! We learned so much and we were thoroughly entertained.

We had such a fantastic experience. Our guide and driver were both excellent and extremely knowledgeable. They made a chilly rainy day so enjoyable. We learned so much about the history of Berlin and understanding how each location can to be
Thank you Melissa, for leaving such a nice review. We are very happy that you enjoyed the tour with Winfried and Jürgen! Enjoy the rest of your stay in Berlin.
We thought we knew a bit about Berlin and its history but this tour with our guide Thomas gave us a much deeper understanding. Thomas showed us all the well known points of interest and then took us deeper to places that we would not easily have come across on our own. Always Thomas made sure we understood the historical importance of places we were seeing. I appreciated that he took us away from the city centre to show us how the communities of the city were connected. We had planned to have lunch at some point in our five hour tour but we were learning so much we could not possibly give up a moment of our time to take a break! We took this tour on the first of four days in Berlin and were able to follow up on the next days with visits to places that Thomas pointed out as significant. This tour resulted in us having a much richer first time experience in Berlin than we could have imagined.

We took two 5-hours tours in Berlin. Our guide , Winfried, was the best we've ever met, beeing very knowlagable, dedicated and funny. He took us to the highlights of berlin, but also to some less known sites, which we would never have visited without him. He also spent a lot of his own time trying to help us with a problem we had with our BVG tickets. Our driver was also very nice and helpfull. Thank you Winfried, we hope to meet you again in Berlin.
