Itinerary

Potsdam’s Old Town is one of the most beautiful baroque centers in all of Europe, yet the city is often overshadowed by its popular neighbour, Berlin. On this walking tour, I’ll share some of East Germany’s unique appeal with you. You’ll hear its history from as far back as the 1700s, through to World War II, all the way to today. I’ll show you the main sights, some lesser-known but equally rewarding spots, and a few of my favourite places in the city too. You’ll start outside the Ringerkolonnade, the recognisable set of columns that stand tall beside Landtag Brandenburg, a replica of Potsdam’s former royal palace which, today, is the seat of the Brandenburg Parliament.

Pass by

You’ll hear why the faces of kings on the obelisk in the square’s centre were replaced with the faces of architects. I’ll also point out the Barberini Palace Museum and the Old City Hall – both restored since World War II – and St Nicolai Church which managed to survive the destruction.

A lot of walking for an old person

I am 66 years old and have bad knees. So I wasn’t able to finish the tour. What I saw, I think it was just as good as a guided tour, that is self guided would not have been improved by a person leading it.

Interesting tour of Potsdam

You get an overview of Potsdam and are provided with some information. It was really fun. Before starting, however, it is necessary to download an app and create an account. Basically, you are well guided, but sometimes you have to orient yourself based on the map.

Scenic and Majestic Potsdam

It was a very well done narrative of the sites and sounds of the area. We learned so much. We only had a problem finding the start location and after leaving a review with voicemap, it was corrected the next day. Highly recommend this deep dive into local history.

Excellent, informative walking tour

Having really enjoyed a couple of Jo Eckardt’s audio tours in Berlin, we decided to do this one in Potsdam. Again it was excellent - a lovely route, well narrated and lots of interesting historical background and anecdotes.
