The guides were very, very nice and well informed. Unfortunately, the place where you could see the axolotls (private house) made us feel sad because the axolotls were in very tiny aquariums. It seems we have booked the tour thinking we would visit the axolotl sanctuary but we actually didn’t. Anyway, the lady keeping the axolotls puts all her time and heart in her work and is very nice. The breakfast place was great (no tourist trap) and the food nice. But we didn’t visit the village at all because it rained.
Thank you for your comment. As the description of this activity indicates we visit an axolotls hatchery, in which you can know them but we didn't mention any sanctuary. The space that the Axolotls have is that indicated by the Mexican conservation standard.
It’s a long drive out. But it was worth it. The work Rosa is doing is wonderful and seeing the axoltls was incredible. We learned so much from Martha. And we got to cuddle baby bunnies and guinea pigs!
This experience exceeded all of our expectations. To start, Martha and Alonso were so lovely and knowledgeable. The axolotls are about a 2 hour drive away, so they broke up the journey by stopping for breakfast on the way. They took us to a fantastic spot, Casa Xoloc, and we had the BEST breakfast ever. The food just kept coming and each plate was even more delicious than the last. We all agreed it was one of our favorite meals of the entire trip. If you are traveling with kids (or anyone that gets car sick) I recommend bringing some Dramamine and taking it when you get to the cafe, as the last quarter of the journey is a bit bumpy and windy. I also had my EarPods and an audio story all ready for our 9 year old to make the time pass! Now for the main event, the axolotls. Martha gave us an extremely informative introduction all about the axolotls and Jose and Rosa’s efforts to save the unique little creatures. Rosa didn’t speak English, but Martha translated everything and we were able to learn even more about their efforts and experiences with raising axolotls. Because they’d recently been exposed to something on a new plant they’d purchased and were still recovering, we weren’t able to hold or feed them, but that didn’t dampen the experience at all. And they made up for it with a tour of their farm animals - we got to hold and feed their rabbits (and 2 week old baby bunnies!) and guinea pigs, pet their mini donkey and feed their sheep. It was an animal lovers dream! If you have a kid that loves axolotls and animals, this is the experience for you. We all enjoyed it so much and it was worth every penny.
I can't recommend this tour enough. If you love animals, are interested in conservation, and want to see a bit of the countryside, this is a must-do in Mexico City! Marta and Alonso were lovely and knowledgable tour guides. First they took us for a beautiful breakfast at a cafe outside of the city, where Marta told the Aztec legend of where axolotls come from, with the help of a stunning painted mural (which we later learned Alonso himself had painted!). Then we drove (a beautiful drive through the mountains and small villages) out to the hatchery, where we learned about axolotl conservation and got to see Rosa's many axolotls up close. Rosa is incredibly dedicated to the health and happiness of the axolotls, even breeding her own food for them. She taught us lots about axolotls in general, as well as her own conservation practices, and was happy to answer our many questions. We also got to meet some other animals -- guinea pigs, rabbits, quails, chickens, goats, and a donkey! We had an incredible time. Such a memorable day and we learned so much.
This was a stellar, conservation focused tour led by some great humans who are trying to save the axolotls. Intimate and detailed, passionate axolotl conservation efforts. My son and I were inspired and learned much from the experience. It makes you want to do anything to save these special amphibians. The axolotl hatchery is well run, and uses science in their approach. Very unique and awesome experience.
Our guides were great! My son is very into axolotls right now so we chose this tour for our trip to CDMX. He loved seeing the axolotl museum, and Dona Rosa took her time to let the kids feed the axolotls and explained everything to us. The food was delicious and the guides were very conscientious.
Alonso and Marta were fantastic guides. We got to stop for lunch after our excursion at a lovely local restaurant. We met Dona Rosa and the fascinating axolotls, as well as a few other animals at the refuge. We learned a lot about these endangered amphibians and this was truly a unique experience, and emphasized an appreciation for the delicate balance of nature. The only thing I’d suggest is that if you have booked this tour, check if Marta and Alonso are wearing their axolotl shirts - this helps to identify each other at the meeting point. I highly recommend this tour!
Highly recommend this tour. My daughter loves axolotls, so we've done every axolotl-themed activity we can find, and this was by far the best. The guides were informative and made sure we had a comfortable experience... even when my daughter was carsick on the drive there. In fact, she said that if it weren't for her tummyache, it would have been the best day of her life.
Audra We felt so happy when we saw you really excited with the Axolotls. Thanks for your comment
This was a fantastic experience for our family. The guides were so friendly and knowledgeable. Our kids were excited to hold the axolotls and we all enjoyed the food.
We thoroughly enjoyed this amazing tour. Marta and Alonso were extremely friendly and informative, and went to great lengths to accommodate our interests. It was easy to meet with them, and during the drive to the hatchery Marta was telling us about a variety of interesting things. When we arrived at the hatchery, we were introduced to Victor and Lupita who showed us around their glorious garden. Lupita cooked us a delicious meal, happily accommodating our vegetarian diet. We learned so much about Axolotls and even got to hold one. After we left, knowing we were interested in pulque, Marta and Alonso went out of their way to drive us to an Agave farm to pick some up, then we explored the local magic town of Tepotzatlan. I highly recommend this tour. Thankyou for the amazing day!
