Austin's Afternoon Stroll

Description
This small group tour is much like our award winning "Austin Small Group Morning Walk," but maybe even better! Like the morning walk, we cover Austin's must see favorites like the interior of the Driskill Hotel. However, the afternoon walk is slightly longer at 2 hours and has bonuses like: visiting Tito's Vodka retail/history shop on Lavaca Street, strolling the shores of Ladybird Lake Trail, and discovering the beauty of the iconic Rainey Street district. We'll even give you time to explore! This tour gives you the experience of how we would choose to spend the day as people who know and love the city. In short, you'll get great recommendations!
Tour Options
Itinerary
Your tour meets and departs from Love, Tito's on historic Lavaca St., downtown Austin. This quaint retail shop is the only retail outlet for Austin's one and only Tito's Vodka! Now a world wide sensation, Tito's started right here in the Austin area. The helpful and friendly employees at Love, Tito's are happy to share both the success and deep roots of Tito's story. Opening at 11:00am, this is the perfect spot to start our Austin adventure! Sorry, no free Tito's samples :)
Standing proudly in front of the Moody Theater, Willie's statue is an iconic representation of why Austin is known as the "Live Music Capital of America". In addition to the statue, there is a cast bronze map at this intersection which shows detail of "old Austin" and the surrounding bodies of water. A perfect opportunity to give our tour the right historical context!
Your private Austin walk takes you along a scenic section of the Lady Bird Lake hiking trail. Just a short beautiful stroll from the Congress Ave. bridge, (aka Bat Bridge), to the historic Rainey St. District. Along your walk, your guide will inform you on everything from details of the famous Austin bats to the history of the Austin barges and ferries before the age of iron bridges. This is a wonderful shaded addition to your tour with spectacular views of the city skyline and, of course, Lady Bird Lake. :-)
The Rainey Street District is one of Austin's best kept secrets! It is an eclectic combination of soaring new condominiums and charming cottages and bungalows. These quaint little dwellings used to be private homes in Austin but now serve as some of the finest, and certainly most fun, restaurants and breweries in the city! While in the Rainey District you will be able to grab a drink or some great food truck eats at the "Stay Put Brewery". This is an award winning brewery with nearby access to some of the finest truck grub in the city!
The home of great American author, William Sydney Porter, aka O' Henry, is located near the heart of downtown and is a brief stop to acknowledge O' Henry's story and his life here in Austin back in the 1880s.
Next to the O' Henry home sits the former home of our local hero, Susanna Dickinson, the lone survivor of the Alamo (1836). At this spot, we recount the bravery of Susanna who not only survived the Alamo, but managed to save her daughter Angelina as well!
On your walking adventure of downtown Austin, you will experience two blocks of the world famous "Dirty 6th Street"! Nearly all of the storefronts on east 6th date to the 1870s and 1880s. Our informed guides will be sure point out the coolest spots for food and, of course, live music!!
The Driskill is a magnificent example of the gilded age in Austin. This beautiful and historic hotel has been standing proudly at the edge of East 6th since its completion in 1886. After a tour of the hotel lobby, guests who so choose are welcome to purchase a drink at the Driskill bar and grill. A perfect way to end your private walk of the Capital city!

It was a great activity to do the day you fly in to get familiar with the area and stretch your legs. Tyler our guide was great and knowledgeable! I would recommend:)
Thank you so much for your review, Tammy! We’re glad you enjoyed starting your trip with us and had a chance to stretch your legs while exploring the area. Tyler is thrilled to hear your kind words! We really appreciate your recommendation and hope to see you again on a future visit. Best regards, Walking Tours of Austin
They did not show up! Or reply to attempts to contact them. Terrible experience for my family from Boston.
We are truly sorry for the frustration this caused your family’s visit. We apologize again for the scheduling oversight — this is not the experience we want for any of our guests. As soon as we were made aware of the situation, we reached out immediately and processed a full refund. We understand how disappointing this was, especially during a trip, and we appreciate your patience and understanding. Warm regards, Walking Tours of Austin
We had a great time on this tour with Tyler as our tour guide. He was very informative and had some great tips. Highly recommend him!!! Thanks Tyler
Thank you so much! We’re thrilled you enjoyed Afternoon Walk Austin with Tyler and appreciated his tips and insights. We’ll be sure to pass along your kind words to him! Best regards, Walking Tours of Austin
Tyler was a great guide - informative, but in an approachable manner for teens and adults alike. We saw a good selection of Austin sights - both old and new and finished a lot more knowledgeable than we started. I would recommend.
Thank you for the thoughtful review! We're so glad to hear that Tyler struck the perfect balance—informative and approachable for all ages. It's wonderful that you walked away with a deeper appreciation for both Austin's history and its modern-day charm. We truly appreciate the recommendation and hope to see you on another walk soon! Warm regards, Walking Tours of Austin
Possibly one of the best tours I've been on in years. Tyler is a fantastic storyteller, giving a thorough deep-dive into the history of Austin. A lengthy, walking tour, but totally worth learning about the history of the city, while touring locations throughout the city. Meet-up point was easy to get to, there's a parking garage located next door, as well as a Starbucks on the corner across from Love, Tito's. There's food and drink options along the way, very cool way to experience a snapshot into Austin's downtown. Tour is safe, travel in an intimate group, and gave me a look into the city that exceeded my expectations. I definitely would love to come back and spend more time, but only had this 1 day to enjoy the city. p.s. bring water and wear comfortable walking shoes!
Thank you so much for your review! We love the passion that Tyler brings to each and every tour. We’re so glad you were able to join us and catch a behind-the-scenes. Look at Austin‘s history and some of our lesser known gems! Please come back and see us again soon! Best regards, Walking Tours of Austin
Two years ago we participated in a food and tour event in Mobile Alabama. That was a tour that included in the cost samples from a number of different restaurants in downtown Mobile We thought this was going to be a similar experience but it was different which was disappointing Perhaps we missed that when we read the material. Tyler did a good job showing us around downtown Austin
Thanks so much for your review! Yes, the “Downtown Austin Walk” is both described and designed to be an experience showing great lesser known spots to drink and eat and then pausing at those spots for any guests that wants to enjoy. We to tell the story of Austin and point out our favorite haunts . Where you enjoy is up to you :-) thanks again!
Great tour, enjoyed hearing the history of the city. Our guide did a good job. He spoke well and was easy to understand. Highly recommend.
We’re so glad you enjoyed your downtown private walk! This is one of our most popular tours, as we have an opportunity to not only to the history of this great city, but point out our favorite haunts to eat and drink. Where the guests stop is up to them :-) Best regards, Walking Tours of Austin
Our guide was full of historical knowledge which helped make the tour very enjoyable. Walking through the old neighborhoods and seeing the new skyscrapers in the background was a sight to see! Austin is a nice city to visit.
We are thrilled you enjoyed your downtown Austin walk! This is one of our most sought after tours, and one of the most fun! Thanks again :-) Best regards, WTA
Great tour of austin and our guide Tyler was exceptional!! Our family from out of town learned so much about austin. We will be back to do again with future company in town. There is no other place like austin and this tour made us appreciate the city even more.
Hi, Mike! We are so glad you enjoyed your tour with Tyler. He absolutely loves Austin and it is so obvious as he introduces guests to the great city! We are so glad you will be joining us again with future guests. Look forward to seeing you again soon! Best Regards, Walking Tours of Austin
My teenage son and I were the only ones on our afternoon walking tour with Tyler. He was friendly, knowledgeable, takes pride in Austin, and paced the tour just right for us. Our fave parts were the walk along the water (even though there was a lot of noisy construction all around), stepping into the historic Driscoll Hotel, and the most delicious hidden taco restaurant we would have never stumbled upon without Tyler (Taqueria de Diez). He answered all our questions, had some good stories, and made sure there wasn’t anything we still wanted to know about before the tour ended. We asked for an ice cream shop recommendation and he suggested Amy’s Ice Creams (where my son and I walked after our tour and it was another superb place!) Thank you, Tyler for an awesome Austin tour.
We’re so glad you got a private tour experience with Tyler! He’s a fantastic Tour Guide, and really knows his stuff when it comes to the history of Austin :-) we so appreciate you taking the time to leave a detailed review and we hope you can come back and see us again in the future! I will pass on your kind words to Tyler :-) Warm regards, Jim Miles, Owner Walking Tours of Austin
