Description

Part of the cultural experience of San Miguel de Allende is located just 25 minutes away from the city: The Sanctuary of Jesus of Nazareth in Atotonilco. The so-called Sistine Chapel of México offers visitors and locals one of the deepest expressions of art, culture, history, and faith. A church built back in the 1700´s that marvels the people that get the opportunity to walk through its doors. On this tour you will learn about the historical and cultural importance of this place on the designation of UNESCO back in 2008. You will also learn about the artistic expressions that existed centuries ago on the area. You will also have a brief time to wander around the vendors, handcrafts, food, and the scenery beside the church.

A surprise experience!

Entering this magnificent church was quite overwhelming… having a guide to hep walk you through it greatly enhanced the experience for us and Felipe was a fabulous resource . He was able to explain the organization of each chapel, the origins, meanings of symbols etc. If we had walked in without a guide we would not have been able to absorb or understand nearly as much . It was also great that he supplied videos of areas we were not able to view bc they were under renovation etc. Thanks to Follow Me for helping enrich the experience !

This is the way to see this important site!

Atotonilco is a treasure of the Mexican independence movement as well as being an artistic feast for the eyes. Our guide, Jamal, has a deep knowledge of the area, the struggle for independence, and…well, everything! She has studied extensively all the art, history, religion and social constructs of the region. Our tour was a masterclass regarding the interweaving of all those topics. Don’t just go to see the pretty church, this tour will help you understand why it is important enough to cause SMA to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Don’t miss it!

Very worthwhile tour. The explanation was so good, we truly understood the importance of this Catholic Church in Mexico. Without her expertise, it would have been another beautiful church. Thank you!

Deeper meaning than dates & facts

This was my first visit to San Miquel de Allende & I am so glad that found this tour! Jalal’s English is very good & she explained the significance of this church & its connection to San Miquel in a way that a book never could. She encouraged us to try a blue corn tostada from a local vendor outside of the church & I was scared at first but she told me that it is very safe. She was correct-no problems! She explained the history of this church, the independence movement & the culture of this place now being a UNESCO hertiage site. Jalal customized the tour to our interests & walking abilities. She even guided us to additional things to see during our visit.
