Itinerary

20 min

We begin our tour at the famous Arusha Clock Tower, one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks and a proud symbol of Arusha’s identity. Built during the colonial period, the tower is believed to mark the midpoint between Cairo and Cape Town, placing Arusha at the very heart of Africa. As we gather here, I’ll share stories about how Arusha grew from a small trading post into the safari capital of Tanzania, now known as the gateway to world-famous destinations like Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Mount Kilimanjaro. The Clock Tower is not only a historical marker but also a beloved meeting place for locals, often used as a starting point for important events and city life. We’ll take time for photos, introductions, and a warm welcome so you feel comfortable before our adventure begins. This is the perfect spot to set the tone for our tour, giving you both a sense of direction and a deeper appreciation for the city’s unique place in African history.

Admission included35 min

At this stop, you’ll discover the story of Tanzanite, one of the world’s rarest gemstones, found only in Tanzania at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. The Tanzanite Experience Museum takes you on a journey through: The discovery and history of Tanzanite, from its accidental find in 1967 to becoming a global treasure. Mining process – how the gem is carefully extracted from deep within the earth. Cultural and economic significance, showing why Tanzanite is often called “a thousand times rarer than diamonds.” Sparkling displays and craftsmanship – admire beautifully cut stones and learn how they are transformed into fine jewelry. This stop is a perfect way to connect with Tanzania’s natural treasures and understand why Tanzanite is so highly valued worldwide.

Admission not included30 min

Housed inside the German Boma, a fort built in 1900 during the German colonial era, the Natural History Museum is one of Arusha’s most important cultural and educational landmarks. Originally constructed as a military outpost, the building itself reflects a chapter of Tanzania’s colonial history before independence. Inside the museum, you’ll explore exhibitions that highlight Tanzania’s role in the story of humanity. Here you’ll find fascinating displays about the country’s famous archaeological discoveries, including the Laetoli footprints and findings from Olduvai Gorge, which prove that Tanzania is truly the “Cradle of Humankind.” Beyond human evolution, the museum also features collections of wildlife, birds, insects, and geology, showcasing Tanzania’s rich natural heritage. There are also cultural exhibits that tell the story of local communities and their traditions. This stop combines history, science, and culture all in one place, giving you a deeper understanding.

20 min

Our next stop takes us to the Arusha Declaration Monument, an important landmark built in 1977 to commemorate the Arusha Declaration of 1967. This was one of the most significant political events in Tanzania’s history, introduced by the country’s first president, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere. The Arusha Declaration laid the foundation for Ujamaa (African Socialism), a policy that promoted equality, self-reliance, and national unity after independence. At the monument, I’ll explain how this declaration shaped Tanzania’s economic and social direction, and why it continues to hold cultural and political meaning today. The site also provides a unique glimpse into Tanzania’s nation-building journey, making it more than just a photo stop. It’s a place of reflection where visitors can connect with the values of unity and freedom that define modern Tanzania.

Admission included45 min

The Arusha Central Market is the heartbeat of the city, alive with color, sounds, and the energy of daily local life. As we step inside, you’ll be surrounded by stalls overflowing with fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, and spices, as well as everyday essentials that locals come to buy. This market is more than a shopping place — it’s where you can truly feel the rhythm of Arusha. Vendors call out their prices, customers bargain with big smiles, and the aromas of local produce and spices fill the air. It’s an authentic experience that gives you insight into how Tanzanians live, eat, and trade every day. During our visit, you’ll have the chance to interact with friendly traders, learn about local foods and ingredients, and take photos of the vibrant displays. Whether you’re curious about tropical fruits, colorful fabrics, or just want to observe the lively atmosphere, this stop will connect you directly to the soul of the city.

Admission included40 min

Our final shopping stop brings us to the lively Maasai Market, a colorful open-air space where local artisans display their traditional crafts. Here, you’ll find an incredible variety of handmade beadwork, jewelry, fabrics, paintings, carvings, and souvenirs — each piece carrying its own cultural story. The market is a wonderful place to learn about the Maasai people, one of Tanzania’s most famous ethnic groups, known for their unique dress, customs, and artistry. As you walk through the stalls, you’ll see the creativity and skill that goes into each handmade item. Whether you’re looking to shop for memorable souvenirs or simply curious to explore, this stop gives you a chance to interact directly with artisans, hear the stories behind their work, and appreciate the living traditions of Tanzanian craftsmanship. It’s the perfect place to take a piece of Arusha’s culture home with you.

Admission included45 min

The Cultural Heritage Centre is one of Arusha’s most impressive attractions, known for its stunning architecture and world-class collection of African art. The building itself is shaped like an eye, symbolizing vision and heritage, and inside you’ll find an extraordinary variety of art forms from across Tanzania and the wider African continent. Visitors can explore towering sculptures, traditional and contemporary paintings, intricate beadwork, wood carvings, and unique jewelry pieces. The art gallery is considered one of the largest in Africa, housing works that reflect the diversity, history, and creativity of African culture. Beyond just admiring the collections, this stop is also a chance to learn the stories behind the art and how different communities express their traditions through craft. For those who enjoy shopping, the center also offers authentic souvenirs and fine jewelry, including Tanzanite pieces. It’s more than a gallery — it’s a celebration of Africa’s culture.

Not a great experience

Unfortunately, this was not a great experience overall. The tour started off well with our guide, Amidi, who was friendly and took us to a few local shops, which we enjoyed. However, he was frequently on his phone throughout the tour, which made the experience feel a little disengaged. We weren’t particularly interested in the art gallery, so we left after a short visit. When we came out, we couldn’t find him for around 10–15 minutes. We eventually discovered he had been talking to another tourist, apparently trying to get more work. The local market was probably the highlight. We were passed on to another person to show us around, and it was genuinely interesting to see the market and get a glimpse into how locals live and work. Unfortunately, there were several issues with our guide’s conduct. While I was in the washroom, he spoke inappropriately to my wife and repeatedly wanted selfies with her, which made her uncomfortable. I only found out about this afterwards. There was also an uncomfortable incident at the stadium where he became involved in an argument with some locals, apparently about money, while we were left standing there. We had read the positive reviews beforehand and were particularly looking forward to being shown around by Honest, so the experience was disappointing. I don’t think Amidi represented the tour particularly well. He is young and may simply need more experience and guidance on how to interact appropriately with guests. We actually ventured back into the city ourselves later and had a much more enjoyable time exploring Arusha on our own. Overall, despite enjoying the market and parts of the tour, we would not recommend this experience based on our day.

Operator response

Dear zhi_p, Thank you for your honest review, and please accept my sincere apologies. I had an urgent family emergency in my village that took me away, leaving the tour in Amidi’s hands. While Amidi is a young guide still learning, his behavior fell far short of the standards I set for my experiences. As the owner, I take full responsibility for this and am actively coaching him on professional conduct, focus, and guest boundaries. Thank you for your feedback, which will directly help us improve. Warmly, Honest Tarimo.

Worst Tour ever in Arusha

I booked this tour in advance with honest and I received a message that meeting will be at Arusha clock tower. No one was there for and it's the new country which i felt unsafe. I waiting for 40 minutes for no guide come to pickup. It's cheap tour but is not a right place. I do not recommend!

An Unforgettable Arusha Adventure!!!

Amidi provided a good city tour of Arusha after Mr. Honest unfortunately could not make it. This tour perfectly blended fascinating colonial and political history with local flavors and spectacular art. Tour Highlights— The Historic Landmarks: Amidi shared the incredible backstory of the iconic Arusha Clock Tower, which was built by a Greek millionaire named Christos Galanos and symbolically marks the exact midpoint between Cape Town and Cairo. We also visited the profound Freedom Tower / Uhuru Torch Monument, learning all about its connection to the famous 1967 Arusha Declaration and Tanzania’s path to independence. Maasai Market: The Maasai Market Curios and Crafts stop was a colorful, lively experience filled with gorgeous handmade beadwork, textiles, and authentic local craftsmanship. The Art Gallery: Stopping at the massive art gallery at the Cultural Heritage Centre was completely jaw-dropping. The sheer volume of breathtaking African art on display left us in absolute awe. The Central Market: Seeing so many vibrant, similar spices stacked beautifully together at the local market was a true delight for the senses. City Transit & Treats: Navigating the busy streets in a fun tuk-tuk (bajaji) while sipping fresh, sweet sugar cane juice made the entire day feel adventurous and incredibly memorable! The Guide Amidi stepped in for Mr. Honest and delivered a chill and engaging paced city tour. He is full of local knowledge, incredibly kind, and ensured I felt welcomed at every single stop. I Highly recommend for anyone looking to truly understand the depth of Arusha's history and vibrant contemporary culture!

Fabulous Arusha City tour

Our guide, Honest, picked us up at our resort for a full day of immersion into the history and sights and sounds of Arusha! I can truthfully say this was an amazing tour with a young local man named Honest. His name is fitting as he went above and beyond to provide us with a memorable visit filled with history and information about the city in particular and the country in general. He allowed us as much time as we wanted to spend at each site and patiently abided our requests and questions. We honorarily "adopted " him as family and are very grateful for his knowledge, advice, and presence. A few of the sights we visited included the Tanzanite Experience, the National Natural History Museum, the Arusha Clock Tower, the Central Market, and the Cultural Heritage Center. Thank you, Honest, for such a fabulous tour! Highly recommended! ❤️
