The Capuchinas Convent was the only convent that allowed low-income women to enter, since the other convents demanded a dowry, which meant goods or money that a woman's family contributed to the convent or religious order to which he was to belong According to experts , some of these cells were for the nuns with better economic possibilities. At the entrance of the Tower you can see side chambers that were used as bathtubs. They are narrow rooms with a window and two small tubs. Next to these cells there is a narrow space with a small hole where firewood was placed to heat the water. The building has a drainage system made up of individual channels installed under each cell and reaching the same storage tank. The specialist shares that due to its characteristics, this is considered one of the first apartment buildings in Latin America.

In La Antigua Guatemala only the big houses had a place where you could wash. For this reason, most of the inhabitants —housewives— went to public laundries. The La Unión Tank (Tanque de La Unión), known in the past as the Plaza de San José, is one of the most representative washing places in this city. It was inaugurated on February 3, 1853. Its arches are neoclassical in style. The Union Tank will function as a social meeting point for daily talks. The tank has 22 sinks in total. A LOT OF GOSSIPING

The most outstanding detail of this enormous church is its VIA SACRA that was built on Calle de los Pasos, so called because of the 1,322 steps that Jesus walked from the Praetorian palace to the hill of El Calvario, where he was crucified. This route is known as the Via Sacra, and the 14 stations were carried out on it.

The Hermitage of El Calvario or Ermita del Santo Calvario is a secular Catholic parish that operates in the city of Antigua Guatemala. It is one of the few religious structures that survived both the Santa Marta earthquakes in 1773 and the subsequent transfer of the capital from the Captaincy General of Guatemala, then known as Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala to a new location. The parish of El Calvario has remained open to worship since its foundation on November 19, 1618 and is recognized for having been built by the holy Brother Pedro de Betancur.

20 min

The School of Christ Church is located in the city of Antigua Guatemala. The temple was founded in the hermitage of Vera Cruz in 1664 and since 1689 it was known as the Congregation of San Felipe de Neri. Due to the 1717 San Miguel earthquakes, the building was damaged, and its reconstruction was completed in 1730 under the direction of the Chief Architect Diego de Porres. After the Santa Marta earthquake in 1773, the church moved to the facilities of the parish of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, when it moved to Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción. Its façade boasts Renaissance architecture and is made of stone, like the Capuchinas church, a characteristic that differentiates it from the other temples in the town

It’s the main outdoor area in town and where people go to sit, stroll, or meet up for an afternoon of relaxation and nice weather. The painting of the church was done by Antonio Ramírez de Montúfar in the colonial era.

Foodie bike tour

Leonardo gave us an amazing tour of Antigua! We joined the bike food tour, which included several stops at the city’s highlights, along with fascinating bits of history. He shared everything in an enthusiastic way, making the experience both fun and informative. Along the route, we stopped at six local spots, places we would never have discovered on our own and every bite was absolutely delicious.

Great food and bike tour with Pablo!

We had a great time on our foodie bike tour with Pablo! The bikes had thick tires and shocks which made riding on the cobblestones much easier. We got to try so many different and delicious foods. My favorite part of the tour was being able to check out different neighborhoods, food stalls, and restaurants that were off the beaten path. Pablo's knowledge and love for Antigua was unbeatable. Definitely a must do if you want delicious and authentic food in Antigua!

Educational, tasteful and cozy!

A very fun and educational tour. Pablo was great. Told us something extra about each place we came to and the food was also very tasty and local. Always special to eat wherever the people from Antigua go to eat. Definitely worth it!

Great way to see the city - further than you’d normally walk!

Did a bike food tour in Antigua with Pablo and Alejandro our second night here, and it ended up being one of the best ways to see the city! This tour was 5hr starting in the evening, but we stopped at multiple local spots that we absolutely would not have found or walked into on our own. All the spots felt very local rather than tourist focused, which is what we wanted! The bikes were in good condition and genuinely fun to ride. That said…the roads in Antigua are very bumpy. The cobblestones are no joke, so if you are not used to that, expect a rough ride (but still fun!). In my opinion, it is part of the charm of the city and this tour, but worth knowing in advance. I felt very safe riding in the streets as the other vehicles don’t drive fast, and all the streets are well lit. Overall, it felt like a strong value for what you get. You cover more ground than you would on foot, eat well, and learn a lot about the area in a short amount of time! The guides were always willing to answer questions and offer recommendations too! CA Travelers puts proceeds toward supporting education and building schools for the local community, which contributes to this tour feeling both well run and purposeful. Note: the reservation might show as pending until they accept, but you can reach out to CA Travelers directly if you are concerned about if the tour is happening or not. Their address is 2a Calle Poniente #25 Antigua, Guatemala 03001, Guatemala

Unique and unforgettable tasty experience

I booked the food tour by bike. The tour was exceptional and so much fun. Farah showed us such great corners and the home cooking in hidden stores, in Antigua and just outside. I would never have found these places. I have not found a comparable tour and can really recommend this tour! All proceeds from CA Travelers also support a school in a suburb of Antigua. The two owners Farah and her husband live for these projects. That was inspiring to see!
