Discover the charms of the capital of Terceira on this guided tour of Angra do Heroísmo. Culture, tradition, Culture and landscapes that await you. You can not miss out!
While the Fortress of São João Baptista personified military power, the Palácio dos Capitães-Generais personified civil power in the archipelago. Throughout its history, with more than four centuries, it served as the seat of the first unified government of the archipelago (period of the Captaincy General of the Azores),
It is the seat of the Bishopric of Angra, which encompasses the archipelago of the Azores, constituting the largest religious temple in the city and in the urban area classified as World Heritage. The current building was built on the former Church of San Salvador, probably dating from 1496
The Duque de Terceira Garden is divided into levels, decorated with lava stones, recalling the volcanic origins of the island, contrasting its dark colors with the luminosity and vivacity of the colors of the tropical plants that swarm here.
The first captain of the donatary of Angra, João Vaz Corte-Real, and other confreres of the Espírito Santo brotherhood established, by commitment, on March 15, 1492, in the then town of Angra, the first hospital in the Azores. It was intended not only for the treatment of the poor and the underprivileged, but also for the sick weakened by long sea voyages.
In this place, the captain of Done João Vaz Corte Real built the first fortification of the old Angra, the so-called Castelo dos Moinhos, around 1474. This fortification, far from the sea, reflected a still late medieval, European and Mediterranean defense concept. on acropolis.

Dora was an excellent tour guide! We walked to different places in the city and she gave a great overview of the history of Azores, and Terceira, and Angra. She also answered all our questions and gave recommendations for activities and places to shop and eat for the rest of our trip, even going so far as to write them all down and giving us notes and a map. This is an especially good tour to do at the beginning our your trip. Dora ended our journey in a city center cafe where she bought us drinks and small Dona Amelia cakes. We highly recommend this experience from Pro Island Tours, and especially with Dora, a most excellent tour guide.
Thank you very much. Itcwas an honor touring with you Proislandtour team
Great walking tour covering the highlights of the city. Dora was a wonderful guide detailing the city’s history, answering our many questions, and sharing some of her favorite spots for things to do and where and what to eat.
Thank you very much, it is our goal to have happy customers, so they can have a memorable time and share it with friends knowing they can trust us. Best regards Proislandtour team
Carolina was very knowledgeable and shared so many interesting facts about Angra. The walk to the top of the museum garden was worth it—the view was spectacular! Highly recommend this tour!
This tour was a great preview of the city of Angra do Heroismo. I did this on my second day on the island and it was the perfect tour to find where all the major sites in the city are located. You can't possibly do an indepth tour of this city in 1/2 a day. We went by the memorial to Don Pedro, the museum of Angra, the cathedral, city hall, down to the marina, through the Captain-General's palace and the city gardens. I felt as if I had my bearings for the rest of my trip after this tour. It was also helpful to have a local as a guide who could share the history of the city as well as tips to fully enjoy the city
