Description

The Andrew Low House can be seen by docent led tours, which depart at 30 minute intervals (on the hour and half hour) every day. Tours discuss the history of the house and the Low family, showing how a wealthy family in Savannah would have lived in the 19th century. The home was built in 1848-1849 by architect John S Norris a notable architect from New York and designed in the Greek Revival style, with a mixture of Revival and Italianate details. The home occupies the entire southwest trust lot fronting on Lafayette Square. The Andrew Low House has one of the few surviving original gardens created in 19th-century Savannah, and the only one open to the public. The design of the parterre gardens dates from the mid century, shortly after the completion of the house. Their layout and planting plans have been preserved ever since, first by the Low family and later by the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America, the current owners of the house

A visit to lovely Savannah would not be complete without a 40 minute docent-led tour of the historic Andrew Low House. This Italianate mansion was built for wealthy cotton merchant Andrew Low by John Norris a sought-after architect from New York. Andrew Low's son William and Juliette Gordon Low the famous founder of the Girl Scouts of the USA inherited the home after his passing. Guest will experience a guided tour by knowledgeable docents departing about every 30 minute (on the hour and half hour) every day. Tours discuss the history of the house and the Low family, showing how they lived in the 19th century as well as those enslaved who lived and labored at the home. First floor rooms include the family’s formal and informal parlors, the library and dining room. Upstairs are a children’s playroom and a rare-for-the-period indoor bathroom, and bedrooms, two of which were once occupied by notable guests of the family.

AMAZING TOUR!!

The house set-up is amazing and very historically accurate. My 7 children and grandchildren loved looking at the different paintings and wood carvings. My 9 y/o granddaughter especially loves the Girl Scouts background history! 100% recommend for those visiting Savannah 😍💯 PS watch out for the creepy dolls! 😱😱😱

Thank you so much for your kind words about your tour experience with us. We are so happy to hear you enjoyed your tour. The museum is so multi faceted with Savannah's rich history and we are so glad you chose to visit us during your trip to Savannah. The dolls......The twin boy dolls in the nursery are by far my favorite.

Gorgeous meaningful home tour!

This house tour was fantastic! The rich history provided by an amazing guide, Frank, provided a superb backdrop for the era and beyond! We were surprised to have almost full access to the house, not typical on most historical home tours! The rich history provided and original surroundings are very special and much appreciated! The effort put forth to maintain and share such treasures is outstanding! Thank you for a wonderful experience!

Possibly the most lavish of the Savannah houses

This is one the later houses, built in 1847 (with indoor bathroom), and Low was for some time the wealthiest man in the city. He could afford to spend and he did. All in good taste, but grand. Steve gives a very thorough tour; knows the house and furnishings very well, willing to entertain questions of all sorts. Some people might go for Julia Gordon Low house for its more direct connection to the Girl Scouts, but this is by far the superior tour for the home itself and furnishings within and should be on your list as an example of 'peak Savannah'.

Great Tour ! Go see & Learn !

We went today and used our $30 TripAdvisor app cash . Thank U . 2 warnings - no public bathroom available for 45 minutes - hour tour and steep stairs ! Frank was SO knowledgeable and gracious. We learned a great deal about Low - Gordon families ! He talked wood, trim production, metal fabrication with my Construction/Woody husband ! Discussed a lot about health , high mortality of Mothers & Babes , Women's Rights & dangerous fashion & finances with me ! The house is gorgeous and mostly original . We learned about the black couple who served their families for decades and were freed and the Lady cook was even given Annual gift of $300 /annually in Andrew's Will !! Amazing ! Go see it ! SO worth it !!

Excellent Tour

I think our docent’s name was Steve. He did an excellent job. The one hour tour was very informative. According to Steve about 1/3 of the furnishings belonged to the family and 1/3 were from the same time period and I don’t remember what he said about the other 1/3!! I recommend this tour however this is the only one we did in Savannah.

So glad you enjoyed your tour with Steve. He’s fabulous! We will certainly pass on your compliments to him. You picked a good one to visit. The Andrew Low House is one of two that has been preserved not restored. You truly feel like you’re stepping back in time. Definitely a treasure. Thank you for visiting us while in Savannah and safe travels!

Interesting to see

The house’s history and the tie to the Girl Scouts was interesting to learn about. However, there were parts of the house that would have been intriguing to see but they were turned into offices instead. The parts you were shown were cool, but I feel there was a lot left to see.

Operator response

Dear Theresa, Thank you for your recent visit to the Andrew Low House Museum. I am so happy you enjoyed your tour with us. The three story home's basement level of the house was once the working part of the home and still is today. Today this is where our administrative offices are and collection files are located. Not as exciting as the main part of the home where about 35% of the collection is original to the family and filled with so much history. If you are still in the area though and would like to take a peek, I will be happy to do this for you. Safe travels home and thank you again for visiting us. Ginger Varner Sales & Marketing Manager
