The Best Excursion of Our Alaska Cruise

If you’re looking for an authentic, hands-on excursion in Ketchikan, I can’t recommend The Local Table highly enough. We were met right at the cruise ship dock and escorted on foot to a charming local venue. The walk was easy and, most importantly for us, completely wheelchair accessible, with smooth concrete and boardwalk surfaces the entire way. The experience was wonderfully interactive. We learned how to prepare fresh-caught salmon using simple, delicious recipes, with all of the ingredients and equipment provided. The instructors made the cooking process approachable and enjoyable, and we were given copies of all the recipes to take home, which was a thoughtful touch. Once everyone had finished cooking, our small group of about 12 guests sat down together to enjoy the meal we had prepared. It created a warm, relaxed atmosphere that felt much more personal than a typical cruise excursion. As a wheelchair user, I especially want to recognize how accessible this experience was. The venue featured a wheelchair-height worktable, a fully accessible washroom, and an overall layout that made participation easy and comfortable. Finding truly accessible excursions can be challenging, and this was one of the very few on our Holland America Alaska cruise that delivered genuine accessibility without compromise. Of all the excursions we enjoyed during our seven-day Alaska cruise, this was one of our absolute favorites. It was fun, educational, delicious, and offered exceptional value for the price. We would happily book it again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Ketchikan—especially travelers looking for an experience that is both memorable and genuinely accessible.

Great and fun experience

Emily picked us up at the port right on time. We walked a short walk to her kitchen. We met her partner who greeted us with soft drinks. Emily explained how to prepare the fish and exactly what we were to do. This was a hands on cooking class where we made Salmon filets and cakes. We got to eat what we made after and everything tasted great. It was such a fun experience. I would do it again. We also got the recipes after.

Delicious & educational!

We are so glad we did this excursion (especially since I am not a cook and wanted to learn how to cook salmon correctly)! Emily and her crew had all of the foods and tools that we'd need ready for us. She did a good job teaching how to butterfly a piece of salmon, and we all had a chance to try it. We made salmon with a brown sugar sauce, salmon cakes, and 2 dipping sauces for the salmon cakes. The group was small (15), which was the right size for the space and staff. I believe the activity was approximately 2-2.5 hours. It was nice that we didn't have to take a bus to another location...we could see the Local Table location from our balcony on the ship! It was, perhaps, 100 yds from the gangway. I would do something like this again! And, we received the recipes via email!

Don't Miss This One!

We love to cook and really enjoyed our experience. We were fortunate to be the only students the day we attended and had so much fun! This was definitely one of the highlights of our 23 day cruise.
