Don't know where to look first! Much to see!

Daniel was our guide for this interesting tour. The place is quite dirty (as scrap yards are). Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for grit and dust. You'll walk through an enormous onion market to get to the site and there will be all sorts of vehicles. Walk single file and be alert! Once you get to the yard you can relax a bit and begin to look around. There is an entire community built within the site and the workers and their families live there. We met a second guide who introduced us to some of the people (including his wife, sister and his child in the recess yard at school!). We met the community leaders, too. There are small shops. A mosque. A betting parlour, even. Chickens, cows and goats. Children playing. Laundry drying. And though there are all kinds of pollutants and dangers I did not feel a sense of hopelessness. People were working diligently scouring scrap for usable parts. I wish there wasn't so much stuff discarded but I also know some people depend on discarded stuff for income. Daniel gave us some really good candid photos he took of us at the end of the tour. Oh, it goes without saying you shouldn't just take photos of whoever whenever you feel like it. It's not just a worksite it's also a hometown for many.
