Lake Turkana is a massive inland sea, the largest desert lake in the world. It is 250km long and widely known as the Jade Sea because of its remarkable color. This is place where the journey is very much part of the destination- and it is only by taking the long difficult road that a real sense of remoteness is gained. Lake Turkana safari Lake Turkana is also known as the “Jade Sea” because of its remarkable blue – green color. This is a result of algae particles, which shift with changes of the wind and light, so that the water surface shifts from blue to grey to fabulous jade. The Lake was originally named Lake Rudolph in 1888 and was renamed Lake Turkana in 1975.
