Is located in Panfilovets’ Park and is probably the only wooden Cathedrals in the world. The cathedral is built without using any nails, which again, makes it pretty unique. The Cathedral was used as a museum after the ‘Revolution’, but was again restored to its original use as a Russian Orthodox Cathedral in 1990. The idea for a cathedral in Almaty was initiated by the bishop of Turkestan and Tashkent and was constructed between1904 and 1907. It was believed that an ‘act of God’ saved the building from the devastation of the 1911 earthquake. The inside of the church is as elaborate as its exterior and is a member of the Russian Orthodox church. If entering the church, visitors should respect the customs of the church as this is a very active religious building. Views from all four sides are different and a walk around is worth doing. On one side is an open area where stalls are laid out for children’s activities and rides.

Panfilovets’ Park is located in central-east Almaty in the area surrounding Zenkov Cathedral. The park is dedicated and named after the Panfilov Heros. The memorial in the park is in memory of the 28 soldiers of an Almaty infantry unit who died fighting the Nazis outside Moscow. Ivan Panfilov was the name of the General commanding the 316 division who, in spite of suffering heavy casualties, managed to significantly delay the enemy’s advance on the capital, buying time for the defenders of the city. An eternal flame commemorating the fallen of 1917-20 (the Civil War) and 1941-45 (WWII), burns in front of the giant black monument of soldiers from all 15 Soviet republics. The Park itself is a very popular local green area within the city of Almaty. A good place to sit, rest and contemplate the sights of the city.

60 min

Today, the Green Bazaar in Almaty at the intersection of Zenkov and Zhipek Zholy streets looks like an ordinary Eastern market, where they sell everything your heart desires: from meat, spices and fruit to textiles and furniture. Here, everyone always bargained fervently, sellers vied with each other for praising their goods and striving to treat customers; buyers, in turn, choose, communicate, in general, life is in full swing. And if you are tired or hungry while shopping, it does not matter: there is a place in the bazaar where to rest and where to drink tea and satisfy hunger. Some people admire the green bazaar with the abundance of goods and the noisy-motley colorful atmosphere of the present East, while others leave indifferent - this is rather a matter of taste.

Guide did not communicate the timings properly

Guide did not communicate the timings properly. We spent most of the time in Kok Tobe and after we came down from the hill, he said the time is up and he can't go for the city tour.

Fuego Almaty City Tour 🔥

Miras showed me a great time in Almaty. I requested to get coffee before we began and he granted my wish. We did each tour as planned and he answered all of my questions. I think the conversations we had were the best parts - this man is very knowledgeable about Kazakhstan, Almaty, and then various subcultures in the country. As an American who had just a little knowledge of Russian hip hop, Miras schooled me on how Almaty is a rap hub for Russian hip hop. To be clear, this was not part of the tour but just a stream of conversations we had, haha. I think my favorite part of the tour was the trip to the bazaar - Miras gave me the downlow on bargaining, so he made sure I didn't get swindled by merchants. I have been to lots of bazaars throughout the Balkans and now Central Asia, but the one I interacted with the most was with Miras at the Green Bazaar in Almaty. The merchants were letting me have lots of free samples of everything they had to offer, yet they were not pushy like other merchants I had been around (barring one man who tried to rip me off but did not succeed). Miras also helped me pick out chocolate to bring back to my friends from the Rakhat factory/store. As we walked around Arbat Street, I was given several recommendations on eats and places to visit. We capped things off with шашлык and Miras dropped me off at the mall so I could check out some crispy Kazakh brands he told me about. Sincerely, a great trip. I love Kazakhstan and I plan to return to Almaty at some point. Great tour!
