Description

On this food tour we visit not one but two of Manchester's most vibrant areas. You will hear the fascinating history of Manchester and it's people. From the golden age of the Industrial revolution to the ultra cool and trendy city of today. On the tour we'll visit some of the city's most famous eating places and also some of our secret spots. Each place we visit has a special dish that tells a story of Manchester. We'll even enjoy a paired glass of wine at one stop and a unique Manchester tipple along the route. All included, no hidden extras. You'll get to meet some of our chefs, bakers and producers. Our mission is to showcase our food heroes and introduce you to a side of Manchester you may never have seen or heard of before. For every person who does this tour we donate a meal to Eat Well Manchester. A charity helping those struggling with food poverty in our city.

A nice walk with a history lessonabout Manchester while eating food.

We went on a tour through Ancoats with our guide Steve. We visited several local foodshops. We tasted bread from a middle eastern bakery, and soup from a Jamaican family owned shop and a fine selection of meats and cheeses from a local butcher/wine shop. Wandering further through the neighborhoods Steve painted a colorfull picture of Manchester going from the beginning of the industrial revolution to his youth around the 70's to the present day using the buildings and surrounding as the props for his stories about the many firsts Machester bestowed upon the world. Steve has his facts straight, because when checking his more 'unbelievable' claims they checked out as true (splitting of the atom, cancer treatment, Man city being the best team that ever existed, slavery abolishment long before the US did, all true). In Ancoats we also passed several places were series and movies were filmed. And around the end of the tour we ate at 'This and That', an Indian restaurant in an alley where you, as a less adventurous tourist would have walked passed looking for a place with a nicer terras. And this is where food tours show their worth. Passing this restaurant up would have left you with missing up one of the best Indian food experiences. Don't take my word for it nor Steve's (although i could not catch that man in a lie) but take it from an Indian member in our group, who was very complementary about the food stating it was as good as at home. Last stop was Abel Haywood hotel/bar/ restaurant where we learned about Abel Haywood and his stauts of the queen and ended up mesmerizing about all the music that came from Machester while eating sticky toffee pudding. All in all a very nice walk with a wealth of things you didn't know about Manchester.

Operator response

Great to read all of this. The whole idea that we're trying to create is that you're walking around Manchester with a local mate. We want you to feel a part of our city and not just a tourist going through the motions. I loved reading this as it seems we're hitting those spots. I need to pull you up on the Manchester City being the best team in the world thing though, but I'll let that go as you were so kind. Safe travels and please come and see us again when you're next in town.

A great way to explore Manchester

A fun way to explore Manchester. Nic was a fabulous tour guide and helped make our trip memorable. We enjoyed discovering some lovely little independent food places & hearing some history too. My favourite stop on the tour was The Butcher’s Quarter.

Operator response

Thanks Helen. They're great guys in the Butchers shop, we've worked with them since we started years ago. Great meats and cheeses and a nice glass of wine. What more can you want. Great to hear you enjoyed the tour and all of our independent vendors. Thanks a lot for coming along.

A bit of this and that

Steven was an excellent host, meeting place was easy to find. We were shown the northern quarter and some of the Manchester history. We started with local bakery, moved to an artisan deli, a taste of Salford rum and a bit of "this and that" ( I will let you discover this Manchester gem) and finally pudding. All the time we found new facts about the city you just don't know about. Well done Steve, great way to spend a few hours.

Operator response

Thanks great to hear you enjoyed the tour and all of our fantastic vendors along the way. We've got a great city here and we love showing it off to our guests.

Amazing!!

We had the best tour with Steve. He was very knowledgeable about Manchester's history. The food was amazing, great portion sizes, we were so full by the end of the tour. The weather wasn't the best and it rained heavily on and off all day but Steve was so proactive and changed the route so we could warm up inside. We would recommend this tour as Steve was so personable and the food was amazing!

Operator response

Great way of experiencing Manchester

This was a very genuine and great way of experiencing Manchester. Our guide, Steve, was very enthusiastic and since it was only me, my friend and Steve, we could ask plenty of questions and learn a lot of the history of the city. Very very nice to walk for a bit, hear about different historic periods of the city and to drink/eat something before continuing. I would strongly recommend the tour for people visiting Manchester.

Operator response

Thanks very much. Steve is incredibly proud of Manchester and rightly so. Thanks for choosing us to show you around. We donate a free meal to Eat well Manchester for every guest who joins us so thanks.
