It was put up by the British colonial administration a year before the celebration of Uganda’s independence in 1962. The Edward Muteesa II Monument: This is positioned at the Speke road and Nile Avenue Junction in close proximity to the independence monument. The Kasubi Tombs are a UNESCO World Heritage site and the burial place of four Buganda kings (Kabakas). The rich history and cultural significance make it a unique place to visit on your Kampala city tour. The Tombs of Buganda Kings at Kasubi constitute a site embracing almost 30 hectares of hillside within Kampala district. Most of the site is agricultural, farmed by traditional methods. At its core on the hilltop is the former palace of the Kabakas of Buganda, built in 1882 and converted into the royal burial ground in 1884. Four royal tombs now lie within the Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, the main building, which is circular and surmounted by a dome. It is a major example of an architectural achievement in organic materials, principally wood, thatch, reed, wattle and daub. The site's main significance lies, however, in its intangible values of belief, spirituality, continuity and identity.
Kabaka's Palace (Lubiri or Mengo Palace) is the royal compound of the Kabaka of Buganda, located in Mengo, a suburb of Kampala, the Ugandan capital. Built in 1885, Kabaka's Palace (Lubiri) is the historic official residence of the Buganda king. Following a 1966 military coup, the palace’s subterranean storage tunnels were used to incarcerate political prisoners. Although the palace’s classic facade has been restored, chilling reminders of the Idi Amin dictatorship remain in the grounds. However, the palace is located on top of Mengo hill which gives spectacular view of the city and other beautiful selling point inside and outside the gate that you will enjoy on your visit.

The guide Musa took me on a free walking tour through Kampala and he did a fabulous job. He has a vast knowledge about his city and its culture, showed me both tourist sights and local places and let me try different typical food. He was showing me his city less as a guide and more as a friend. Thank you, Musa!

Had an awesome day walking around Kampala with Musa. We explored all sorts of places I would not have felt comfortable going on my own and even after the walking tour was done he came and did the other things we wanted to do like see the Palace, find some material to buy and even walked us back to our hostel, telling us tips and tricks and fun facts along the way. So generous with his time and so knowledgeable of the city. Will definitely be exploring another part of the city with Musa soon!
