This is SCAM! Tickets were ordered several month in advance. A couple days before we received a message that they might not have any tickets. Than they were again saying that they will deliver. Delivery didnt happen 3 times as promised. In the end we received a wrong number of tickets for the wrong class and a simplified and not hones sorry message.
Train ride through the beautiful Sri Lankan country side. Only downside is the cost of tickets and we found them difficult to get. There were 4 of us (2 adults, 2 kids), our seat numbers were not together, but as the train was not busy we swapped seats, so it worked out.
Chose this ride primarily to avoid the winding road journey. The train was late at Nanu Oya but made it up to reach Ella on time. Was glad with the decision - because we got great views & delightful company throughout the journey. The train stations hold an old world "charm" (if you may call it that). We weren't lucky to have our train halt on the Nine arches bridge. Visited it later that evening.
I enjoyed traveling from Nanu Oya to Ella by train. The scenery was spectacular and it was interesting to see the women working in Tea Estates community.
For most tourists getting on to a train journey in Sri Lanka is on their bucket list. Sadly, I did not know about the Nine Arch bridge until I reached Sri Lanka. Not to be faxed, I managed to get train tickets, with no reservations. The 3.5 hour ride from Nanu Oya to Demodara rail station was spent standing but the splendid sights—tea estates, farmlands, valleys, waterfalls and several tunnels—took my mind off the uncomfortable journey. As more passengers got off, I was able to get a seat. The train ride is quite slow and the train stops at every station. The railways stations are clean, no litter anywhere and there are roses and other flowers enlivening the space. The train ticket costs Rs 1,000 per person and the ride is very beautiful and memorable. The Nine Arch bridge has tourists putting a leg and an arm out to get pictures of the train with them. It is an exciting train ride as tourists and locals enjoy the journey—whistles pierce the compartment as the train chugs through tunnels. I got off at Demodara station—a quaint old world charming place.
