Der Park ist 1.317 Quadratkilometer (131,693 Hektar) groß und reicht von 0 bis 152 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel. Fast einhundertsechs Seen (Willu) und Tanks gibt es in ganz Wilpattu verteilt. Wilpattu ist der größte und einer der ältesten Nationalparks Sri Lankas. Wilpattu gehört zu den Top-Nationalparks, die für ihre Leopardenpopulation (Panthera pardus kotiya) weltbekannt sind. Von Juli bis Oktober 2015 wurde in Wilpattu vom Wilderness & Wildlife Conservation Trust eine Remote-Kamerabefragung durchgeführt. Eine Stichprobe von neunundvierzig einzelnen Leoparden wurde im vermessenen Gebiet fotografisch erfasst und die Kerngebietsdichte lag zwischen der des Block I des Yala-Nationalparks und des Horton Plains Nationalparks.

We drove through a large part of the park with an experienced driver. Nature is really beautiful, many animals seen, including a bathing elephant, crocodiles, many birds, monkeys and even... almost a leopard. Recommended!
