Hand awesome trip with Geoff and his son. He was very knowledgeable about the area. Made sure we got to see all the best sites, plus more. I had the best time and would highly recommend it. If you do this tour specially ask for your driver to be Geoff!!!
A fabulous 7 hour trip after getting off from the cruise ship at Whittier last Monday. Kevin was a great driver guide who took us to the breathtaking places on the way before dropping us at the anchorage airport. He graciously answered all my questions about the history too and then, pictures say a thousand words...
Great way to spend extra time after our cruise since our flight out of Anchorage was a late take off time. An amazing tour seeing beautiful sights inland, spending plenty of time at each stop getting to appreciate the last day of vacation. Appreciated the comfortable ride and snacks provided plus stopped for the best slice of pizza in Alaska at Griswood. Kenneth was a courteous and helpful driver.
What a great day. Our guide was fantastic he gave good information but did not talk nonstop. He is born and raised in Alaska so he knows what he is talking about. We had an 8:00 pm flight so it was great way to spend the day. 5 stops for sightseeing and great views. Highly recommend this outing.
Our tour guide did not know the itinerary. Did not try to stop at all the destinations until someone on the tour showed the booking details. It was strictly a van transfer that stops at a few places with no commentary and no local knowledge. The lunch stop was at a gas station with fast food restaurants.
We needed to get from the cruise ship in Whittier to the airport in Anchorage. This was a transfer and tour in one. We saw glaciers and did some short hikes, which was fun. Kevin was our driver and guide. He was friendly and knowledgeable. There were six of us in a nice van. Kevin even provided snacks. Highly recommend.
Pros: Trip took a good chunk of time, which was needed because our flight was not until 11:30 at night. Best ice cream ever was at our lunch stop. Definitely get the Alaskan Birch Brittle. Cons: No narration. Drives were done in nearly complete silence. We expected a knowledgeable local and kept reading about “Geoff”. We had Kenneth and he was definitely not a local. It felt more like a glorified taxi ride with multiple begrudging stops. After the first two stops, we stopped for lunch. At the end of lunch, the driver started asking where we needed to be dropped off because the next stop was the last one (Potter Marsh Bird Sanctuary). I had to point out to the driver that we had 3 more stops and asked about Beluga Point and Earthquake Park. Driver said we could not stop at Beluga Point because it was on the “left side of the road.” He seemed surprised we were supposed to go to Earthquake Park. After speaking with another driver, he told us we would go to Bird Point instead of Beluga Point as they both overlook the same body of water. Bird Point was also on the left side of the road. We were supposed to be at Potter Marsh for 1 hour and the stop was 30 minutes. Driver seemed to be in a rush after they realized they had a lot more stops after lunch. Driver smoked at every stop brought the smell back into the van. We were supposed to have Free WiFi, but no WiFi was ever mentioned to us. Overall, the excursion did its job, but not worth the almost $800 for a family of four. Felt like a burden on the driver.
Thank you for your feedback. While we are glad the timing worked for your flight and you loved the ice cream, we deeply apologize that the tour fell so short of expectations. We take your comments seriously and are taking immediate action: Rigorous Retraining: We are heavily retraining our team on narration, route accuracy, and hospitality so no guest ever feels like a burden. Strict Smoking Policy: We are addressing the driver's smoking immediately. This behavior is unacceptable, and we are ensuring that smoke odor never compromises our vehicles or guest comfort again. We are incredibly sorry for this experience and are using your review to ensure it does not happen again.
Be aware of spotty cell phone and text reception. Don't rely on driver to find you. Ours "found" two other passengers and left us stranded. Called Alaska Horizon Adventure main office, they diverted a different tour driver to pick us up. Would have been much simpler if instructions were to “ Pick up bags and walk under the covered walkway to the end of the parking lot where independent drivers park. We did not get the tour we signed up for: Missed Portage Lake 90 min (Admission included), Potter Marsh 60 min, Beluga Point 30 min, Earthquake Park 30 min. We did walk around Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center to see mostly empty enclosures, hiked over a mile to a glacier and a short but steep hike to a waterfall...not best activities for 78 year old and 77 year old with Afib.
Dear Jim, Thank you for your feedback. I deeply apologize for the stressful experience and the communication breakdown upon your arrival in Whittier. We are immediately updating our pickup instructions to include your excellent suggestion: directing guests to the covered walkway at the end of the parking lot where independent drivers park. Relying on cell service in Whittier is not enough, and we appreciate you helping us improve this. I am also incredibly sorry that the backup tour did not match your physical needs or the relaxing itinerary you originally purchased. Your safety and comfort are our top priorities. Because you did not receive the experience you signed up for, our office will reach out to you directly via Viator to process a partial refund. Thank you again for helping us improve our operations. Warm regards, Daniel Owner & Operator, Alaska Horizon Adventure
Extremely pleased with our trip up from Whittier to Anchorage. Geoff was a terrific guide and would suggest him if given a chance.
Our tour guide, Kevin, was cheerful, polite, and watched out for everyone’s safety and comfort. He took us on a hike to Byron glacier, to a waterfall tucked in a rain forest, and to see many species of four legged Alaskan wild life. We even saw a moose up close as it grazed in a suburban neighborhood of Anchorage. We learned about fishing in Alaska and watched seaplanes land and take off, and so much more. He clearly communicated with us where and when he would pick us up at the Whittier cruise ship terminal and dropped us off in front of our hotel in Anchorage. He even prepared a bag of snacks for everyone!
