In Venice, we don’t have car traffic, but we do have “people traffic.” People often stop on bridges or in narrow streets for photos, which can create little traffic jams. There is another side of Venice, away from the crowds, that reveals itself to those who are curious enough to explore it. Instead of showing a museum-like version of the city, I want you to experience the real Venice, welcoming you as guests and travelers rather than just tourists. Before tourists, selfies, and cruise ships, there was a completely different Venice: a maritime empire that controlled routes, wealth, and secrets for centuries. During my tours, we explore the hidden history of the Republic of Venice: its military power, its political influence, and how it went from ruling the world to becoming just another tourist attraction. What remains today of that forgotten power? What was Venice like before tourism? We walk through maps, documents, and recreated scenes to relive the splendor of a Venice that almost no one remembers anymore. As I always say, I encourage people to be travelers, not tourists, in order to gain a deeper and more meaningful understanding of this city. Of course, I’m happy to share where we Venetians eat. But above all, remember my first piece of advice: never enter places where they invite you in. If they need to invite you, it usually means they aren’t busy. The same rule applies to shopping. Unfortunately, there is far too much junk souvenir culture driven by bad tourist habits. My approach is to surprise my guests, to truly understand them, and to personalize each tour as much as possible.
