Unser erster Halt ist die Jvari-Kirche, die eine der ältesten Kirchen Georgiens ist. Der Name der Kirche wird mit "Kreuz" übersetzt. Die Kirche bietet einen herrlichen Blick auf die alte Hauptstadt Mzcheta und den Zusammenfluss zweier Flüsse (Aragvi und Mtkwari). Die Dschwari-Kirche wurde von der UNESCO zusammen mit anderen historischen Bauwerken in Mtshketa zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt. Jvari ist der perfekte Ort für diejenigen, die in die Vergangenheit reisen und die Architektur des Mittelalters genießen möchten.
Unsere letzte Station ist Mzcheta – die alte Hauptstadt von Kartli, dem ostgeorgischen Königreich vom 3. Jahrhundert v. Chr. bis zum 5. Jahrhundert n. Chr., und war auch der Ort, an dem das Christentum 337 zur offiziellen Religion Georgiens erklärt wurde. Obwohl die Hauptstadt verlegt wurde Neben dem leichter zu verteidigenden Tiflis im 5. Jahrhundert war Mzcheta weiterhin Krönungs- und Begräbnisstätte georgischer Könige und Sitz des Patriarchen, der auch als Bischof von Mzcheta bekannt ist. Hier besuchen wir die Swetizchoweli-Kathedrale aus dem 11. Jahrhundert – dem frühen goldenen Zeitalter der georgischen Kirchenarchitektur. Swetizchoweli gilt als Mutterkathedrale Georgiens und ist das Begräbnis vieler Könige Georgiens, ihrer Familienmitglieder und Patriarchen der großen Kathedralen, obwohl das Heiligste in dieser Kathedrale der Teil des Gewandes Jesu Christi ist, von dem angenommen wird, dass er darunter liegt das Mittelschiff, unter einer quadratischen Säule, die mit bunten, wenn auch verblassten Fresken der Bekehrung von Kartli geschmückt ist.

Giorgio was very accommodating and friendly, we visited Jvari and Mtskheta as well as a third cathedral. He was patient and we could spend enough time in the town of Mtskheta.

We only had a few days stopover in Tbilisi and wanted a short tour from the city to the main highlights. This tour is a great way to see the Caucus Mountains. The guide Catherine was excellent and very eager to speak with us all. The sites we visited were well curated, hitting all of the highlights around Kazbegi. Lots of car travel is required, but it’s coupled with adequate stops and chances to walk around.
