We also had a fantastic experience with Traveling Spoon and our wonderful host Alex in Luang Prabang. This was much more than just enjoying delicious Laotian food—we learned how to cook traditional dishes ourselves during a hands-on cooking class paired with a guided market tour. Exploring the local market with Alex helped us discover exotic ingredients we never would have found on our own. Because this was a private experience, we received Alex’s full attention, along with detailed explanations and tips that made the class both fun and informative. The food was excellent, the experience was authentic, and it gave us a deeper appreciation for Lao cuisine and culture. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Luang Prabang who wants a truly local, immersive food experience.
I had a fantastic time this cooking experience. The market tour, the cooking session, and sharing a meal were all amazing. Alex was very kind and friendly, and his warm hospitality made the experience special. The home was cozy and beautiful, and the hotel pick-up was very helpful. I highly recommend it!
I participated in the market tour and cooking class (not for dinner, but for lunch). I can confidently recommend this experience. The Phosy Market tour is an incredibly stimulating place, filled with fascinating sights such as an impressive variety of vegetables I had never seen before and exotic meats from unusual animals. Si and his wife kindly guided us through these details, which can be a bit challenging for foreigners to understand on their own. In the cooking class, you can experience the process of creating pure and authentic Lao home-cooked dishes. Unlike its neighboring countries, such as Thailand or Vietnam, Laos doesn’t have a strong dining-out culture, making it hard to encounter genuine Lao dishes like those prepared at home (this is just my personal observation). What I found particularly valuable was the opportunity to truly understand and savor authentic Lao cuisine through the cooking process and lunch. This amazing experience was made possible by the hospitality and warmth of Si and his family. I believe this activity will greatly help you gain a deeper understanding of Lao culture.
Amazing experience! We often book cooking lessons when we travel as it's the best way to experience local culture.; especially the experience of going to a local's home. Husband and wife, Si and Nee, were so authentic, welcoming and informative. We cooked, chopped, boiled, and grilled in their wonderful, functional and clean outdoor home kitchen with mountains in the background. All was explained to us, including first walking through the market to buy our vegetables. Si speaks English very well, Nee is still learning, but she's a trained chef and had no problem helping and guiding us. We learned so much about food and culture and enjoyed many laughs. Our reward was to sit down, family style, in their outdoor dining area and eat our delicious meal. Their daughter and son joined us for awhile and it helped complete the picture of a Lao family cooking and eating together. Tuk-tuk transportation, included in the price, made getting back and forth very easy. We lived in other parts of Asia for several years and have always felt a true travel experience is something like what Si and Nee gave us. We highly recommend this.
Our hosts for the day were Si's wife and brother-in-law, as Si was called away for a family emergency, but his family proved to be very friendly, patient and welcoming. We started the day with a market tour, which was very interesting and where our dietary preferences were taken into account, before making our way to the family's well-kept home, where we then prepared food and cooked in their fantastic outdoor kitchen for a couple of hours before sharing lunch with our hosts and two delightful kids from the family. The whole experience was great. The only thing I would note is that in the blurb it said hotel pick-up and return was part of the price, but we had to pay for it separately. Only a minor gripe though, as the class on the whole was fantastic.
We had such a lovely time with Si and his family, cooking 5 delicious dishes. It was fun to go with the family to the local market to pick out all of the ingredients, while they educated us on local produce and meats. Back at their lovely home, cooking in the outdoor patio kitchen over wood fires was a real authentic experience
This was a wonderful, authentic experience with Si and his family. We shopped in the local market, then went back to their home and cooked with them in a beautifully designed outdoor (but shaded) traditional kitchen. It was a wonderful experience that I would very highly recommend.
My girlfriend gave me this cooking class and it was outstanding. We started with a market tour after Si (His name) picked us up. Afterwards, many small dishes were conjured with him, his wife, his mother and cousin. It was a lot of warmth and also fun. We were allowed to do everything after a short introduction. This was rounded off with its own whiskey (whoever wanted it would be properly rewarded). All in all, always happy. The best cooking class I've ever had.
At just before 9am we were picked up by Si, his wife and cousin. They showed us the morning market, explained the many different foods on offer and let us participate in the shopping of the food for our cooking class. A perfect start to the day. After our successful purchase, Si brought us to his home and introduced us to his rest of the family. Cooking was done outside with a roof as protection from the sun and a very nice view. We were shown what to do before each step and then allowed to lend a hand ourselves. The many super interesting dishes were prepared with a lot of love. Thanks to Si, his wife, his cousin and especially his mother for the nice time. To our surprise we were allowed to try his own whiskey which is very good. We would definitely come back. And recommend this to everyone. There is no better and more personal cooking class than this. Please do not change your kindness and hospitality. If there were, we would have liked to give 6 stars.
I have had 2 cooking classes with market tour in Chengmai and Laos. They are so professional and supportive. I think their classes are more than you can ever expect. Also support from Tripadvisor were helpful.
