Excellent tour covering key Gilded Age mansions and their history, but also delving into an array of other (super interesting) topics. Our guide, Luke, was fantastic! He kept us laughing, answered all our questions, and had incredible knowledge on all things gilded age. If you can book with Luke, do so! You won’t regret it.
No entrance to mansions which was an expectation. We only saw mansions from outside tour leader showed videos /photos on tablet.
As other reviews have mentioned, the tour does go into several of the mansions. Other mansions seen on the tour are today are either schools, modern museums, or privately owned and some of the modern museums have not preserved the Gilded Age interiors and are therefore not worth going into to see preserved Gilded Age interiors.

Do not book this tour expecting anything close to what the listing promises. The listing advertises a two-hour tour with eleven detailed stops, interior access, and included admission to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. What actually happened was a rushed one-hour walk that ignored the itinerary almost entirely. We went inside exactly one building. A handful of others were gestured at from the sidewalk with a few sentences each, and the rest were skipped completely, including the Met, despite admission supposedly being included. Without much explanation, the guide left us at the Cooper Hewitt Museum, which is not on the itinerary at all, announced that the tour was over, and told us our admission there was covered, and we could go inside. When we tried to enter, we were turned away, entry was denied. This is a bait-and-switch. The itinerary on the website is a total misrepresentation. If the operator cannot provide the tour they advertise, they should stop selling it. Save your money and your afternoon.
Unfortunately, this is an inaccurate review. The tour was booked by the child of the two guests who went on the tour. The person writing this review did not even go on the tour and sent a message saying they would not write a review in exchange for a full refund, which is quite telling. Unfortunately, they were the only 2 guests on the tour. They did not speak much English and were not interested in the history, nor the architecture so many reviews have praised, telling the guide they could just Google what he was telling them. As stated earlier, these two guests were the only people on the tour and were not interested in the content which so many reviews have appreciated, therefore the tour did not last the full length of time. When they got to the Metropolitan Museum of Art they told the guide they were not interested in it because they had “already done it” They told the guide they were only interested in interiors and as many reviews have noted that while the tour does go in some of the mansions, others today are either schools, modern museums, or privately owned and some of the modern museums have not preserved the Gilded Age interiors and are therefore not worth going into. That is why the tour ended at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum (one block south of the last stop) because the first floor interiors are preserved and tour does go in there. Finally, this tour has received many five star reviews praising the knowledge, storytelling, humor, interiors and photos shared. This should not have been booked for these two guests because they weren’t interested in the very aspects that have earned this tour so many five star reviews.
Loved everything about it. Our guide, Luke, has a great energy, curiosity, and wit, and he was so attentive to all our needs, including walking slowly enough that everyone could keep up. We really appreciated the multimedia aspect—all the photos, floor plans, etc. brought the era to life—and the fact that a bathroom break was included! Thank you so much for the wonderful time. We learned a lot!
Luke was an excellent guide whose knowledge of History and added flair made for an enjoyable experience.
Had a great tour of the 5th avenue mansions with our tour guide Luke. He was very knowledgeable and had plenty of stories and pictures for each stop.
This was a really fun first day activity and introduction to New York. Luke was really knowledgeable and his presentation of interesting facts about NYC history was impeccable. He was very entertaining even to my tired teenagers. The places we went were really interesting and we got to go in a few. Overall top notch tour, never bored, just the right length. And you are right next to Central Park so you can go over there afterwards.
Gilded Mansions Tour Guide Is Great! Care, our tour guide, was great. Very informative, humorous, prepared. Had pictures on his iPad of the people involved and the mansions from back in the day. Highly recommend this two-hour tour. The tour ended oh Fifth Ave. so easy to catch a cab downtown.
This is a must for any fan of history or architecture or New York or the Gilded Age series. Luke was a knowledgeable and engaging guide.
