Wonderful Market Tour with Danielle We had a fantastic experience on the Victor Hugo Market tour with our guide, Danielle. She was incredibly accommodating, knowledgeable, and super friendly throughout the tour. Her enthusiasm and expertise made the experience both enjoyable and informative, and we learned so much about the market and local food. We highly recommend this tour, and especially Danielle as a guide. A wonderful experience from start to finish!
An excellant insight into the culinary delights of toulouse and local history. Jessica the guide was highly knowledgable and worked very hard to tell us everything she knew and obviously answered all our questions. Highly recommended
If you wish to explore the Market culture in France then I recommend the” Taste of Toulouse” tour of the Victor Hugo Marché in Toulouse. An enjoyable way to experience one of the oldest markets in France, while sampling the produce and learning of its origin. The guide Jenn made the tour very enjoyable and insightful
Thank you for such a lovely recommendation - the market is still one of my favorite places to send guests wandering, armed with everything they've discovered. Jenn has a gift for making that history feel alive rather than recited. Hope Toulouse stays on your radar for another visit. - All the best, Jessica
Ally was a great guide to the market. She knows a lot about food, about Toulouse, and about the vendors in the market. She did a wonderful job of engaging with all of us and explaining what we were tasting. I would recommend the tour with no recommendations.
So glad Ally's knowledge of the market vendors stood out for you - she's spent years building relationships with the stallholders, which is exactly why she can point you toward what's worth tasting. Thanks for taking the time to write this up - it means a lot. Hope to have you back for another wander through Victor Hugo. - Jessica
Jenn gave us an outstanding tour of the market on a very hot day in July. (She even had cooling towels to help beat the heat). She explained the MOF designation, the idea of terroir and modern day French culture. We feasted on several specialties from the market along with generous servings of excellent wine. We enjoyed the best dessert-the Paris-Toulouse Brest with Violet is not to be missed! All of this was inside the market so we avoided the worst of the heat. Jenn gave great recommendations to further enhance our time here. I’d recommend Jenn to anyone and I’d also recommend booking the tour early in your stay so you can take advantage of Jenn’s advice.
Those cooling towels are such a Jenn move - that's why she's our "hostess with the most-est!" Glad the MOF and terroir explanations gave you some real context, and the Paris-Toulouse getting top billing doesn't surprise me one bit (it's why we chose it!). Thanks for such a detailed review - Jenn will be delighted to read it. Hope the rest of your stay in Toulouse was just as delicious. - Jessica
Allie was an excellent host and the small group of 4 of us really hit it off, though we were from varied parts of the US. The history and story telling was great and the food and wine were awesome!
Michael, so glad Ally and your group of 4 hit it off despite coming from all over the US! She loves bringing the market's history to life, and it sounds like the food and wine sealed the deal. Thank you for joining us on the Victor Hugo Market Tour - hope you're back in Toulouse again soon. - Jessica
Tania our tour guide was so enthusiastic and accommodating everyone in the group. She provided us with a voluminous assortment of food samples. We even got wine with our cheese sampling. I highly recommend this tour and Tania.
Dennis, that 'voluminous assortment' line made me smile - Tania does love making sure no one leaves hungry! The wine and cheese is always a highlight too. Thank you for such a generous review and for recommending the Victor Hugo Market Tour. - Jessica
Tania was fantastic! It ended up just being my spouse and I for the experience. She shared so much helpful information regarding the market and the various types of foods and drinks available. It was our second day in Toulouse and was nice to get a well rounded tour of their specialties there in one place. We enjoyed a coffee/juice-bring cash for the drink, but it's very inexpensive. All other areas accepted card. We also enjoyed a delicious baguette and chocolatine (choc. croissant). It's frustrating how much the US charges for bread vs here. We later tried some some aged/dried meats, foie gras, wine, cherries, and cheeses. We enjoyed a crystallized violet that was quite interesting but tasty. She also sends you all the information about what we tried during the tour and other recommendations in Toulouse. It was a wonderful tour and highly recommend!
Glad the crystallized violet made an impression - it's so rare outside of Toulouse! Tania is so good at making the tasting feel like a proper education without it ever feeling like a class. And the follow-up notes are something I love about our tours - I want guests to keep the curiosity going after they leave the market. Really appreciate you taking the time to leave a review. Hope Toulouse stays with you for a while! All the best, Jessica
The Victor Hugo Market tour was fantastic! Danielle was an incredible guide. We were able to meet several of the purveyors of the bakeries, salumeria, etc. We also had the opportunity to sample many of the market's specialties, and we visited an incredible cheese shop. At the end, Danielle took all the food we had gathered from the market, and we had a wonderful lunch. It was a great experience.
Really appreciate you writing this. The lunch at the end - gathering things from the vendors across the morning and then enjoying it all together - is the moment I love most about the market tour. Danielle has so much passion for the market and bringing people together through food. And that cheese shop is one I'll never take off the tour. I'm so happy to hear you loved the experience. - Jessica
The tour was a perfect curation of delicious pastries & chocolates in Toulouse! Peppered in were great historical facts on history and the artisanal process for the desserts. As soon as the tour was over, my friends and I did it in reverse! Jessica was an amazing guide and this was the highlight of our adventure in Toulouse!
Lovely to hear that the artisanal context around each chocolate and pastry came through - that's the part I never want to feel like a history lesson. Understanding how the producers we work with have made changes how you taste things. Doing the tour in reverse is honestly one of the best compliments you can pay me. Thank you for the kind words; hope Toulouse stays with you. - Jessica
