Surfunterricht mit Frijoles Locos Pros - Playa Grande Costa Rica!

Excellent service from the booking process and even after the activity! The guides were amazing and very attentive. We went with a group of 16 students and 2 leaders/guides from Putney Student Travel, and they provided us with wonderful service. We often choose to do these activities with this company, and we will continue to do so in the future, as the students have a great time.

Giovanni was great with our 4 kids. He was an amazing instructor. They had a blast and were up on their boards within minutes. It’s been the kids’ favorite experience of our trip. We regretted not taking the lesson after seeing how much fun it was.

This was everyone’s favorite activity out of the 7 we did on our vacation. I wish we hadn’t waited til our next to last day to do it because we might have gone every day! The beach was the perfect place to learn and as a spectator it might have been just as fun for me as it was for my husband and two daughters (16 &10).

Great service, got surfing lessons for my son. Was easy to sign up online and he had an awesome time learning to surf.

The whole team was amazing. Giovanni was my instructor and was a huge help. I rented a board for three days and returned to switch boards as my skill level was improving. Gio saw me a few times out on the waves, during his time off, and still tossed a few pointers my way.

OMG, where do I start....I wish I had done the lesson on the first day not my last!! Giovani was the BEST instructor, he provided clear instruction with clear and expert advice, his English is excellent, and was positive and encouraging from the moment I met him. He stressed not only having fun and the how the to's but always stressed the safety aspect and the reasons why the safety measures were in place. He knew the best place to learn away from the crowded main part of Playa Grande ;) He provided excellent feedback and enthusiasm, every wave surfed was met with a high five and a Hang Loose with a huge smile. The encouragement kept me going back for more waves and more fun. I was surprised how easy it is to get up on the board and how much time you do have to get into the correct position and no need to rush, again because of the excellent instruction from Giovani. The first time I stood up on the board, it was an overwhelming sense of joy and accomplishment, I wanted to shout out a whoop whoop!! My surf lesson was on Jan 2, 2026 and I still close my eyes and dream of the best hour and half of my 2026. I remember one particularly large(ish) wave and the sound it made, that was how I knew it was the biggest one I had surfed by the sound of the crest behind me. Giovani and I had the chance to get to know each other a bit as we would head out for the next wave and he is the sweetest man and a FANTASTIC Uncle to his niece and I know she will be as expert a surfer as he is some day with his teaching her. I admire him immensely for chasing his dream of surfing and making it happen and his dedication to the sport and the love and respect he has for the ocean and the chance to do what he loves and when I say his love I mean love, he surfs before work, for work and after work. I was moved by him sharing with me that he does a sunset surf to honor the gift the ocean provides and gives thanks back to her. We both agreed that the ocean was part of our soles. Pura Vida Costa Rica and Giovani I will be back :)

We took a private lesson with Giovanni. I’ve taken a few surf lessons before this trip, and Giovanni was by far the best instructor I’ve ever had anywhere. He is super outgoing, friendly, and helpful. He catered the lesson to both of our skill levels. 10/10 recommend frijoles locos for surfing.

Frijoles Locos was recommended to me by a friend and they did not disappoint. Drew was really accommodating with our schedule, very reasonable cost, and the instructors made sure everyone got the attention and guidance we needed so that everyone in our group (15-53 yo) was able to get up on the boards and ride a wave into shore before we wrapped. Playa Grande is an idyllic setting with no crowd which made it even better. Pura vida.

We had such an incredible experience with Frijoles Locos Surf Shop in Playa Grande! From the moment we arrived, the entire team was kind, welcoming, and full of positive energy. Our instructor, Sebas, was absolutely amazing—patient, encouraging, and clearly passionate about teaching. He made the lesson fun and approachable for all of us, regardless of skill level. We had such a great time during our first session that we signed up for a second lesson with him—and we’re so glad we did! Each experience left us smiling, more confident, and eager to keep surfing. Frijoles Locos is a gem of a surf shop, and we can’t recommend them (and Sebas!) enough. Thank you for making our trip so memorable!

Had a great time our first time surfing. Westin was fantastic and showed us the fundamentals and helped us catch some waves our first time out. Highly recommend them for your surfing rentals and lessons!
