This was a very good tour the guide was friendly and helpful, if there was information that she did not know she would look it up. Although all destinations were worth seeing, Olveston was the highlight.
Thank you for taking your time to share your feedback. We are glad to hear you enjoyed the tour and especially visiting Olveston, it is a true gem of Dunedin isn't it?
Nice overview of Dunedin area. Friendly and helpful guide, though I would have appreciated more discussion and explanation of what we were seeing. Lanarch Castle and Gardens are amazing, but we were disappointed to have very little time to explore the gardens or go inside the house. I’d be happy to skip the “steepest street“ and spend more time at the castle. The van we were placed on was very small for the number and size of passengers and was quite uncomfortable given that we were one of the four people sitting across the back.
Thank you for your feedback and for joining our tour—we’re glad you enjoyed the overview of Dunedin and your visit to Larnach Castle and its gardens. We appreciate your comments regarding the level of commentary and will take this on board with our team to ensure we provide more in-depth information throughout the journey. Regarding the time at the castle, the way this tour is designed includes an interior guided visit to another historic home - Olveston, which retains original features showing how the family lived. For Larnach Castle, we do not specifically include an interior tour. Instead, there is time to enjoy the exterior, explore the gardens, and have lunch at the café. Some guests choose to skip lunch and use that time to go inside the castle instead. We also understand your comment about Baldwin Street—we include it as a well-known highlight, though we recognise that preferences vary. If the castle is your main focus, we would recommend booking a tour that is dedicated solely to exploring it in more depth. We’re also sorry to hear the seating felt uncomfortable. Based on feedback from our visitors, we have already upgraded our fleet to vehicles with larger windows to better appreciate the scenery, including Toyota Coaster and Ford Transit, as well as Mercedes-Benz for smaller groups. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts—we truly value your feedback as it helps us continue to improve our tours.
Yes we enjoyed the excursion and the guide was very informative. The spots were very interesting. Well worth the cost.
Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re delighted to hear that you found the tour interesting and that our guide’s commentary was informative and engaging. It’s wonderful to know you had a positive experience with us.
Highly recommend. Asta was a great guide- personable and knowledgeable. Having a small group was great.
Thank you — it’s wonderful to hear you had a great day! I’m especially pleased to hear that the small group experience was enjoyable.
Avoid this tour. We have traveled globally; this is the worst tour ever. For our small group, the guide was not prepared enough. First, he said he had to "borrow" a small bus; it was old, uncomfortable, noisy, with broken air conditioning, and air did not circulate well. At our meeting spot, other tours had modern buses. Not sure what happened here. One attendee had to slide open the emergency window to give us air. Second, there were too many brief stops (about 10-20 minutes) long where we would need to exit the bus to catch a view, then return promptly. He kept nagging us about returning to the bus on time to keep on track, but why do this? At one stop, he expected us to pick up our lunch on our own and see 3 blocks in 20 minutes while he stayed in the bus. We weren't able to find and order food in time so we were without food the whole day.. He was unfazed and didn't seem to care how we felt or even ask if we got food. The bus was noisy that it was very difficult to hear him at times. One stop was odd because the bus was parked very close to the edge of the road on a mountain cliff which was not safe getting in and out of the bus. In retrospect, I regret signing up for this tour because the house tour was not very interesting and too long. The castle was not really a castle, but a rundown refuge that was ugly and run down. I would not recommend this tour - look elsewhere for a tour that is fun, informative and memorable.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we had to replace our usual vehicle for that particular day. We’re sorry the substitute bus did not meet your expectations — that’s certainly not the experience we aim to provide. It was also an exceptionally busy day in Dunedin, with two cruise ships visiting at the same time. Our guide suggested free time in the Octagon for takeaway lunch because it offers a wide range of options and tends to move much faster. On very busy cruise days, the café at the castle can have extremely long queues, and we wanted to avoid you spending a large portion of your tour waiting in line. We’re genuinely sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy the one-hour guided tour of Olveston Historic Home. It’s considered one of the true gems of our city, and in our eight years of guiding, this is the first time we’ve received feedback like this. Of course, we respect that everyone has different interests — for many guests, the hour actually feels too short, so it can be difficult to strike the perfect balance for every individual. It’s also unfortunate that Larnach Castle — New Zealand’s only castle — did not resonate with you. Many visitors appreciate its history, gardens, and coastal views, but we understand that not every attraction suits every traveller’s taste. From your comments, it sounds like a private tour may have been a better fit for your group. A personalised option allows complete flexibility — spending less time at certain stops, more time at others, and adjusting lunch arrangements to suit your preferences. On a shared group tour, we do follow a set itinerary designed to give everyone a balanced experience and equal opportunity to enjoy each stop and take photos. We truly appreciate your feedback, as it helps us reflect and continue improving.
The trip with Fantail Tours was a huge disappointment for me and absolutely not recommended. There was no employee on site at the specified meeting point at 9:30 a.m. After I asked at the cruise terminal, I was informed that the group had already left. It was only after I contacted the company via WhatsApp that it was even checked if anyone else was waiting for me. Such an unprofessional level of organization is not acceptable for a booked excursion. In addition, program items were simply shortened or omitted. In the Botanic Garden there was no announced hike, but only a very short stay of less than 20 minutes. The visit to the castle lasted only about 50 minutes, although according to the program 1.5 hours were scheduled. In addition, the castle was hardly photographable by parked buses. The tour, advertised as a “small group”, was also not true. A group of 21 people has nothing to do with a small group for me. Overall, neither organization nor performance is correct compared to the description. My clear recommendation: In Dunedin, it’s probably cheaper, more flexible and less stressful to take a taxi on your own.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are genuinely sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your experience. On the day of your tour, our driver-guide was at the Port Chalmers cruise terminal from 9:00 am. All other 18 passengers had arrived by 9:00 am, with some guests checking in even earlier. We usually depart as soon as all confirmed guests have arrived to maximise the day and include as much sightseeing as possible. However, we waited until 9:30 am, which is our official departure time, before leaving. On some occasions, when a ship arrives later than scheduled, we do delay departure slightly to ensure guests have enough time to disembark comfortably. However, on this particular day, most visitors were able to meet us before 9:00 am, so we were aiming to depart on time. As we had not heard from you and our guide’s call went unanswered, it would have been unfair to delay the entire group further without knowing whether you were still intending to join. Before departing, our guide left his contact details with the visitor centre staff in case you arrived shortly after. Thanks to our amazing team, together with the visitor centre staff and Port Otago staff, communication was quickly coordinated with our driver once you were located, and we were very pleased that you were able to join the tour. We hope you appreciated the extra effort made by our staff and driver-guide to ensure you could still participate. If there had been a train or plane departing at 9:30 am and you were not there, you would have missed the trip entirely. Despite the timing, you were still able to enjoy the tour, which we are glad to have made possible. Regarding the group size, we normally operate this tour with up to 18 passengers. On that particular day, due to high demand and two cruise ships visiting Dunedin, we had a slightly larger group than usual. We also appreciate your comment about the buses at the castle. Coaches are generally only permitted to drop off and collect passengers; however, with two cruise ships in port, the area was exceptionally busy as many visitors wished to see the castle at the same time. We are sorry that your experience did not fully meet expectations. For future departures, we strongly recommend guests arrive at 9:00 am as advertised to ensure a smooth start and to make the most of the day. Thank you again for your feedback.
Loved the personalized tour! Highly recommend if you want to get a feel for the town in one day! Guide was excellent and shared lots of interesting information.
We’re so pleased you enjoyed the experience! There’s something really special about exploring with a smaller group — it gives you time to soak it all in and really connect with the place. It’s wonderful to hear you felt you got a true sense of the town in just one day. That’s exactly what we aim for — meaningful highlights, great stories, and a relaxed pace.
Great overview of the city and a variety of experiences - museums, botanic garden, viewpoints. Very interesting guide with a love for Dunedin.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re pleased to hear you enjoyed the mix of experiences and that the tour gave you a well-rounded sense of Dunedin. It’s always rewarding to know that our passion for the city comes through and helps bring each stop to life. We really appreciate your kind words and hope you left with lasting memories of your visit.
We had a beautiful day with Asta. Turned out that we had a private tour& and she was so flexible and agreeable to anything we needed to do or see. The views were incredible! The castle gardens are lovely ; the steepest street is cool! She took us to the botanical garden and pointed out different plants. & very interesting trees. It was a pleasure To spend time with this lovely lady. She loves this area and you could tell.!!
Thank you so much for your lovely review! It was such a pleasure spending the day with you and sharing some of my favourite spots around Dunedin. I’m thrilled you enjoyed the gardens, the unique streets, and the botanical treasures—we had a lot of fun exploring together! I always love showing this area to visitors, and it makes me so happy to hear that you could feel that enthusiasm.
We visited Dunedin, New Zealand while on a cruise. It was a fantastic tour. Pick up and drop off was very easy. Our tour guide Asta from Fantails picked us up from the cruise terminal. It was a small group of 4 people on the tour. Our tour guide Asta was very knowledgeable and she gave us a lot of information about Dunedin rich history. Scenic drives overlooking the city were stunning. We went to the Baldwin Street, steepest street in the world. Inside tours of the Olveston historic house with its rich history and inside tour of Larnach Castle with its beautiful gardens were our favorite. We also made short stops at University of Otago, Dunedin Railway Station, Dunedin Botanic Garden and First Church of Otago. It was a great tour, we spent a lovely and a memorable day with Asta. We highly recommend this tour.
Thank you so much for your lovely review. It was a real pleasure hosting you in Dunedin and sharing the city’s history, scenery, and heritage with you. While our tours can sometimes include slightly larger groups up to 10 or 15 people), on the day you joined us we had fewer bookings, which allowed for a relaxed and very personal experience—those are always especially enjoyable. I’m delighted to hear the day was memorable for you, and I truly appreciate your recommendation. Wishing you many more wonderful travels ahead.
