Die Zwillingsdörfer Joal-Fadiouth liegen etwa 110 km südlich von Dakar, am Endpunkt der Küstenstraße. Joal, der Geburtsort des ersten Präsidenten Senegals, Léopold Sédar Senghor, liegt auf dem Festland. Im Gegensatz dazu ist Fadiouth eine kleine Insel, die nur über eine lange Holzbrücke erreichbar ist. Bemerkenswerterweise besteht die Insel vollständig aus Austern- und Muschelschalen, die über Jahrhunderte hinweg abgelagert wurden; diese Muscheln säumen das enge Labyrinth von Straßen und sind sogar in die Wände der Häuser eingebettet. Die Gemeinschaft ist bekannt für ihre religiöse Toleranz, in der Christen und Muslime in perfekter Harmonie leben. Dies spiegelt sich in der Architektur der Stadt wider, wo neben einer ebenso prominenten Moschee Heiligtümer der Jungfrau Maria und eine große Kirche stehen. Eine zweite Holzbrücke führt zu einem massiven, uralten Muschelhügel, der als gemeinsamer Friedhof für beide Glaubensrichtungen dient – ein letztes, friedliches Zeugnis für den Geist der Einheit im Dorf.

Das Zwillingsdorf Joal und Fadiout liegt etwa 110 km südlich von Dakar am Ende der Teerstraße, die entlang der Küste verläuft. Die Insel Fadiout besteht ausschließlich aus Austern und Muscheln, die im Laufe der Jahrhunderte abgelagert wurden. Das Dorf Fadiout bedeckt die Insel und alles besteht aus Muscheln. Sie bedecken das Labyrinth der engen Gassen und sind in die Wände der Häuser eingebettet. Das Zentrum hat einen bestimmten Charme. Die Bürger von Joal und Fadiout sind zu Recht stolz auf die Toleranz ihrer Religion. Christen und Muslime leben dort in Harmonie. Fadiouts Marienheiligtümer und die große Kirche werden durch eine ebenso große Moschee ergänzt. Das allgemeine Gefühl ist harmonisch und Fadiout hat eine sehr entspannte Atmosphäre. Ein riesiger alter Muschelhügel ist über eine andere Wodenbrücke zu erreichen und beherbergt sowohl einen christlichen als auch einen muslimischen Friedhof. Unterwegs besuchen Sie den berühmten heiligen Affenbrotbaum.

We were a group of 8 and we silent 9 days touring different regions of Senegal with Pape and his driver Lam Pape treated us with kindness , thoughtfulness and care . It’s not easy to manage these many ppl with various needs ; he was always gracious , patient , and ready to pivot . He always made sure that our needs were met and prioritized Where ever we went , he explained historical context, he had wonderful and professional contacts outside of Dakar , and stepped in and translated when needed I consider him a friend now and will definitely reach out upon my return to Senegal

For twelve days we were allowed to enjoy an unforgettable trip through Senegal. We visited Dakar, Île de Gorée, La Somone, M’bour, Warang, Réserve de Bandia, Mjoal-Fagiouth, Sine-Saloum, Saint-Louis and the desert of Lompoul. Our trip was managed by the super cool and warm guide Pape Eric of « Sensafari », who shared with us with infectious enthusiasm his love for his country. Together with our skilled driver Malick they formed a top team. We immersed ourselves in the local culture, enjoyed the rhythm, the colors, the hospitality and the special atmosphere that makes Senegal so unique. Thank you, Pape, for your good care, your warm friendship and your unforgettable optimism. An absolute must for anyone looking for more than just a trip.
Ce fut une expérience inoubliable que nous avons jamais vécu avec un groupe comme celui de Mark, Gerald, Helene, Anuck, Charlotte, Sam et .... Ce circuit qui a dure 9 jours a commence de Dakar a Somone, Bandia, Joal Fadhiout, Sine Saloum, Saint Louis, Lompoul pour finir a Thiès. Votre sens de l humour, votre gentillesse et générosité ont rendu cet expérience si spéciale. Les 9 jours ont été pour nous comme juste une journée tellement que nous n avons pas senti le temps passé. Nous vous sommes vraiment reconnaissant pour le temps pris pour nous écrire un tel commentaire. Nous espérons vous revoir une autre fois dans ce beau pays le Sénégal.
Shell island was a wonderful and intriguing visit to people living in seemingly a different time. Very tranquil. Consider it a must experience when visiting Dakar. Pepe Eric was very informative, engaging and cordial. He was right on time, and picked us up and dropped us off at the hotel.

A good experience. Eric was kind and professional tour guide. Tour encompassed a walk around the old town, a walk around the cemetery island, then a short boat ride along the mangroves.

This was truly a life changing experience; the highlight of Senegal! This place isn’t overrun with tourism & is where you can see an authentic side of the country. It is a journey (3 hours) but it is so worth it. My tour guide was very kind and I cannot say enough good things about Edward, the guide on Shell Island. I can’t wait to bring my family back here!
