In den 70er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts wollten Architekten als Antwort auf die großflächige und graue Moderne der Architektur des Wiederaufbaus nach dem 2. Weltkrieg unter Beteiligung der Bewohner und anderer Nutzer gastfreundliche Wohnquartiere schaffen.
2011 organisierte die Gemeinde Rotterdam die erste Stadtinitiative, ein Verwaltungsinstrument zur Förderung von Verwaltungsinnovation und Bürgerbeteiligung. Die Einwohner Rotterdams waren aufgerufen, Projekte einzureichen, die zur Belebung der Stadt beitragen und die Lebensqualität in der Stadt verbessern. Für die Umsetzung des Projekts wurden von der Stadtinitiative 4 Millionen bereitgestellt.

Vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg gab es keinen Hauptbahnhof, aber es gab vier Stationen um das Zentrum herum. 1957 wurde der Hauptbahnhof am heutigen Standort eröffnet. 2004 wurde mit einer Totalsanierung des Hauptbahnhofs begonnen, 2014 wurde das aktuelle Endergebnis geliefert. Der alte Bahnhof war dem Passagieransturm nicht mehr gewachsen.
Die Laurenskerk ist der einzige Überrest des mittelalterlichen Zentrums von Rotterdam. Die Laurenskerk ist eine Kreuzung zwischen einer Hallenkirche (alle Gebäude gleich hoch) und einer Kreuzbasilika (hier sind die Seitentürme niedriger als der Hauptturm). Die Kirche wurde zwischen 1449 und 1525 erbaut.
Die Innenfassade der Markthal ist mit einem 11.000 m² großen Kunstwerk (zwei Fußballfelder) von Arno Coenen und Iris Roskam mit dem Titel Hoorn des Overvloeds bedeckt. Dieser Titel bezieht sich auf das Füllhorn, ein Horn aus der griechischen Mythologie, das Fülle und Sättigung symbolisiert. Das Kunstwerk zeigt stark vergrößerte Früchte, Gemüse, Getreide, Fische, Blumen und Insekten. Im Hintergrund sieht man auch die Laurenskerk mit Turm.
Im Mittelalter eines der 10 Stadttore, die Rotterdam hier hatte. In den 30er Jahren wuchs die Stadt Rotterdam schnell und das Tor stand im Weg, da sie einen besseren Fluss für den zunehmenden Verkehr wünschten. Es wurde beschlossen, das Tor um etwa 100 Meter zu verschieben (ein Abriss des Tors stieß auf großen Widerstand). Bei der Bombardierung im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde das Tor schwer beschädigt, ein Jahr nach der Bombardierung wurde das Tor abgerissen, weil es nicht mehr fertig gestellt werden konnte. Einige Ornamente des alten Tores wurden gerettet und in die Mauern der Gebäude an der Ecke des Rathausplatzes eingearbeitet.
Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs ist nicht viel vom historischen Zentrum intakt geblieben, aber der Oude Haven ist glücklicherweise einer dieser historischen Orte, die erhalten geblieben sind. Im Hafen liegen historische, charmante alte Boote, während Sie an den Kais eine bunte Mischung aus Gebäuden finden.
Das Weiße Haus wurde 1889 erbaut und war mit einer Höhe von 43 Metern das erste Hochhaus in Belgien, den Niederlanden und Luxemburg.
Derzeit ist das Meeting einer der Hotspots in Rotterdam. Es gibt viele Cafés, Restaurants und Bekleidungsgeschäfte. Es ist auch eine Straße, in der es ein bisschen darum geht, zu sehen und gesehen zu werden.

We enjoyed this walking tour with Jess as she gave us a good amount of Rotterdam history. She met us at the port and also brought us back with a few train rides and a good deal of walking along the way. We made a stop for coffee/latte, however there was no lunch or street food as advertised when we booked. The tour took about 4 hours.

the tour guide arrived over 15 min late and told us he lost his bag on the subway with his wallet, keys, and tickets. He could not take us on the tour. He left and came back 1/2 hr later saying that he accepted his fate and could start the tour but would extend 1 hr later than planned. We were very disappointed and did not get the tour. we called viator to ask for our money back. the local tour company did not answer their phone- we had hoped that they could send a replacement .

After returning within the agreed timeframe, he was fully prepared to conduct your private tour and even offered to extend it by an additional hour so you would still receive the complete experience. Unfortunately, by then your group had decided not to continue. We also apologize that you were unable to reach us by phone. We missed Viator's call and immediately tried calling back, but were unable to get through the automated phone system. Mo was our guide and he was incredible. We knew very little about the city and learned so much. The tour was perfect for us. We had an infant with us and the timing and Mo, our guide, was a perfect fit. The tour size gave us time and attention to ask questions and not feel rushed. Jamaal was an excellent guide on this three + hour walking tour of Rotterdam. He was very knowledgeable, courteous, and prompt. We learned a great deal about the city, its history, people and culture. Two highlights that we especially enjoyed were the Cube houses and the Market Hall. Our time with Eleftheria...El was fantastic. She showed us her hometown of Rotterdam with such genuine enthusiasm that it made the experience even more enjoyable.
