Ein Besuch der Basilika San Clemente aus dem 12. Jahrhundert offenbart ein glänzendes Goldmosaik über der zentralen Apsis. San Clemente verwandelte sich über die Jahrhunderte von einem privaten Haus, das im ersten Jahrhundert den Ort für geheime christliche Gottesdienste darstellte, in eine imposante Basilika. Was sich unter der Basilika befand, war bis 1860 unbekannt, als eine Überschwemmung einen irischen Dominikanerpater und Archäologen in die Ebenen unter dem Boden der Basilika führte. Die Ausgrabungen sind noch im Gange. Heute können Sie bis zu 30 Meter unter die Erde hinabsteigen und drei Ebenen erkunden. Auf der ersten Ebene finden wir eine Basilika aus dem 4. Jahrhundert, die nach dem Bau der Basilika aus dem 12. Jahrhundert darüber lange vergessen war. Darunter liegen die Überreste eines antiken heidnischen Mithras-Tempels. Noch tiefer finden sich Ruinen antiker römischer Häuser.

This was spectacular. Our guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic and genuinely cared about the material. He was patient with question and his enthusiasm made this a very much enjoyable experience. He even helped us get a taxi in the end and waited for the taxi to arrive.

We had an amazing underground tour of the Basilica of San Clemente with Eddy! He was incredibly energetic, engaging, and knowledgeable throughout the entire experience. His enthusiasm for the history and archaeology of the site made the tour both educational and fun. We found the tour a little long many stairs but we're able to relax in the gardens which we did after before heading back to our hotel thankyou for the experience worth the trip

Luca, our guide, was great! He is very knowledgeable on San Clemente and lead a very informative tour. I learned more from him than I would have just visiting without a guide.
